Just to belabor this further ......

Then what are preserves? And how do they fit into the jam/jelly context?

And what is marmalade? A jam? preserve? a fruit spread perhaps?!!!!!
and then there's always chutney to think about... Is it a relish? or maybe a fruit sauce?

Boro- please send the nurse my way with many fun medications! Oh, and Happy Birthday!

Dammit, trillian, you have made the burden of being a geek even heavier!
Preserves are jams which preserve the original shape of the fruit.
Marmalade is apparently just a variation on jam, but in the US, at least, always seems to have peel from a thick-skinned fruit, like oranges.
Chutney has not penetrated as far into the hinterlands as I live, and is probably regarded as a terrorist menace by the grocery purchasing agents out here anyway.

Right, especially since Ireland is independant, not part of the commonwealth. I think - my confusion is exceeded only by my ignorance.

Now for the important question - do the Scots call their jello "jelly"? Or do they have more class than that?

What the hell is MPFC? I've lived here all my life & never heard of it.

Okay, I think I understand. The inhabitants of the British Isles are all British - this includes the English, the Scottish, and the Irish - but they are all not necessarily happy about it.

That should read "The inhabitants of the British Isles are all British - this includes the English, the Scottish and the WELSH" goddammit.

Have you heard of a few chaps named Graham Chapman, John Cleese, Terry Gilliam and Eric Idle?

Sadly, it's "jelly" all over the United Kingdom.

No, I'm serious. You should see the weather we've been having.

It stands for Middlesborough's Proper Football Club, to distinguish them from the other one what plays* in red.

* If you can call it that.
