Default Filters

When we read a new text there can be many layers of understanding.

I am saying that the text holds many levels of understanding, and depending on who you are and which filters you employ, you will see different things.

If you only use a christian filter you will "only" see a christian understanding or lack thereof.

Likewise if you only use an atheist filter or buddhist filter you will only see that.

So when we also meet new people, we filter them through our belief-structure, and if they don't fit they are sinners, or bad persons and so on.

Why is it that it is so hard to see things fresh and unafflicted of our own point of view?

Is there a "filter" that can be used across the board?

Or is a no-filter filter the best?

Because our minds are trammelled.
Quote:
tr.v. tram·meled, or tram·melled tram·mel·ing, or tram·mel·ling tram·mels or tram·mels
To enmesh in or as if in a fishing net.
To hinder the activity or free movement of.
By the very operation of our minds, our points of view are thus constrained. We do have the ability to learn, though.

Cheers, John

P.S. I want to build a POV (Point of View) Mapper so we can place our thoughts w.r.t. the POV(s) that generate them.

Can I borrow it when you're done? I want to interface it with an optical reflector. This should produce a view of infinity from the pov of nothing.

Because we ain't nothing but mammals and the world is a big and complex place. Look around you. Imagine if you had to process every detail of what you see - the colours, the shapes. You'd spend all your time doing nothing else. Our filters alow us to get on with the business of surviving.

Actually, this function will already be built into the POVMapper (TM) otherwise it would be incomplete. The POV you are describing is informally described as the "Dissapearing up your own anus" POV.

What is this "as is", and by the way youve just undermined EVERY beleif structure, if you have to start over and reapply every thing, then obviously you dont beleive. Taking everything in a "new" perspective, excuse me, but this sounds alot like being a sponge. note: i have nothing against sponges and sometimes watch a certain one on tv, i have no desire to be one...

What you speak of DOES happen. It happens when we are young children. As children, (and I am speaking toddlers here) our opinions about the world have not yet been formed, and thus, we take everything at face value. This is possibly why children are so naive. However, as we grow, we begin to show a framework that has been in the process of development throughout our child lives. When we are adults, we filter everything through this framework, because this is our only way of looking at the world. Only by examining this worldview and evaluating it can we break into a new one.

So in short, the reason that we filter everyone through this is because we automatically develop this filter as part of our development, and NEED it (to a certain extent).

It's interesting to try and notice the filters in action. For example, in a crowded room the noise is just a babble, unless someone speaks your name. Or you don't notice your big toe until you stub it.
