I think that the ultra fundies, the current power in the right, and our administration are all about fear. They're afraid of differences, they're afraid of non christians, they're afraid of non heteros, and they want everyone else to be afraid too. Perhaps this is something the dems could use.

I really enjoyed this post psycho dave. I was actually having a conversation with one of my teachers about school prayer when this subject came. I used one of your examples and pointed out that the views of conservative talk-show hosts like Mike Savage and Ann Coulter are really not that far from the KKK's. Anyway, great essay, keep up the good work man.

Here's an article by The Happy Heretic that discusses some of the things mentioned in the OP:

I'm very, very happy to be a New Zealander. That's all I can say, really.

Far off...
As much as I agree with you Psycho Dave, I have to point out that any extremism is a bad thing, and that includes extreme liberalism as well as extreme conservatism.
Luckily, there are many Christians who don't follow what those hateful people have to say. They know better. I know, I live with many who openly voice their scorn for those people. I have teachers who can only laugh at them. Just out of curiousity, what is the percentage of ultrafundies and fundies in the US? |

Psycho Dave
Your synopsis certainly hits on many of the outer layers of the propaganda campaign onion. Might I suggest that you examine the following two URLs carefully in order to better appreciate how the current public exposure to "hard core radical right" propaganda has become so all-pervasive and successful. http://www.fcc.gov/ http://www.fcc.gov/ownership/ If you examine the current administration's appointments to the various government agencies, you can better appreciate how the religious and political right wing radicals have been able to dominate the various media outlets. It only required one or two vote changes to gain the kind of foothold that they have. |

Don't overlook D. James Kennedy.
He may be one of the most dangerous, not only because he is a huge backer of Reconstructionist "historian" David Barton and Alabama Judge Roy Moore, but also because, as a soft-spoken Presbyterian, he appears more moderate and reasonable than the fundy screamers like John Hagee (also worthy of mention as one of the most bilious of the Armegeddon fundies, a true crackpot). Kennedy, at first glance, seems quite mainstream - but look at his website or listen to his sermons and you will find someone as dishonest and deceptive as anyone you will find attacking C/S separation and evolutionary biology. This little beauty is from his Reclaim America site. |

This bit jumped out at me:
"No, I'm not talking about the tim that Ranall Terry went on a nationally-broadcast Christian radio program and asked listeners to "please assassinate Dr. Warren Hern", director of a Boulder, Colorado Abortion Clinic. " Huh? That isn't protected speech, that's incitement to violence. And Randall Terry wasn't arrested for that? :banghead: |
