Question should christians be held accountable for the Old Testament?

(continued from a tangent on the adultery thread)

my stance:

The Christians are very proud of their heritage from Judaism (although I personally do not see how the religions are compatable) and they rely on the OT to prove their religion.

They have accepted it as the word of god, as such, they need to defend it.

If they denied the OT, and we were expecting defense, then your arguement would be valid. But they accept it.

Yes, they are accountable for the OT for without it there simply cannot be a Messiah, who was allegedly prophecized by the prophets of the OT. The TEN Commandments are an integral part of Christian religiou doctrine, so much so that good ol' Christians want to rewrite American history because of it. They maintain the myths of the OT, such as Noah's Ark, the fall of Sodom and Gomorrah, etc., etc.

Some seem to pick and choose. They choose to ignore those parts of the OT that they don't like (like kosher laws and God-sanctioned brutality) while embracing the parts that they do like (like the ten commandments, etc.)

I found it funny when Disney released a Moses story movie... funny because I always thought of it as a Jewish story, but it was being marketed to the population at large.

Agreed. I remember my own dad was telling me about various things we should uphold in the OT, but how overall the NT is where it's at. He seemed to be arguing that the truth or relevance of the OT is subjective. I came close to asking what objective means he had to judge which parts of the OT were relevant or not, but I decided not to.

This seems to support the notion that you can support almost anything with the Bible if you are willing to cut and paste the relevant parts and disregard everything else.

"For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled." (Matt 5:18)

"And it is easier for heaven and earth to pass, than one tittle of the law to fail." (Luke 16:17)

jesus certainly taught that the OT law was to remain valid.

Just how many tittles does the law have anyway?

What makes that even worse, is the way the NT authors had to rummage about to find prophecies to support Jesus as messiah. Is there even one that actually says what they claimed it said?

I love seeing them try to squirm out of the OT stuff. They'll claim Mosaic law isn't relevant, and if you want one sort of argument you can point out the "jot and tittle" passage. Or, you can say, "OK, forget the legalistic part, but this is the _same_ god back in the OT, right? And he did all this stuff (baby killing, wiping out whole cities, etc.), right? Loads of fun all around.
