Default Sick and tired

I belong to a caving club and over the past few years I have seen several caving friends drop out and lose their minds with fundamentalist type religion. Just last week somebody posted a funny little item in our group e-mail that did a parody on the "God says" billboard thing. Well, a couple in our club really went off and blasted us all for our anti bible, evolutionist mindset. Then said they would quit our club and essentially told us all to burn in hell (not exact words, but that was the essence). I am SO sick of this kind of closed minded hate crap perpetuated by bible toting fundies. I have, in recent years, called myself a "liberal Christian", but lately I am more likely to call myself an anti-religionist.
Really, I honestly believe that fundamentalism (Christian or otherwise) should be considered a mental illness similar to obsessive compulsive disorder and should be treated as such.

Hi Caver,

I can certainly sympathize with your current level of frustration and know for a fact that there are many others here who can as well (if that's any consolation). This is a great place for advice on how to deal with situations like this, if you desire it (advice that is).

As far as the "fundamentalism as mental illness" topic goes, LOL that one's been tossed around in here once or twice as I recall (I'm not laughing at your idea but rather the remembrance of flames a'past on this topic ).

Anyway, FWIW, you are not alone in your frustration and are in good company here.

As a Christian, I sympathise-indeed empathise.

As the Bible says 'bear with your weaker brethern.' In five years time they'll be as embarrassed as you are perplexed now!

Freshman year in college,

I had a group of friends that I was going to get an apartment with. 2 of them were very religious, I was and still am a strong atheist. I though that we had an "agree to disagree" arrangement. Anyway at the very end of the year, they decided that they didnt want me to be their roommate, because I regularly made fun of god with my atheist and agnostic friends.

So, I realize what you are going through, I was extremely pissed at the time. It can be frustrating when otherwise normal people go all fundy.

As for fundy being a mental illness, it does have all of the signs, hearing voices, doing what those voices tell you, believing in something that doesnt exist. Believing in possession. etc etc

Well, perhaps not but many years ago a friend of mine went overboard on the fundemantalist thing ( and I am not unsympathetic to fundemantilsm per se) but he now looks back and cringes.

But joking apart, it is a problem.

Another point on this sorry tale is you are not dealing with anything that Jesus did not have to face up to.

As a Christian, I am much more comfortable with (most) sceptics than distorted Christians-whether liberal or fundis. But best of all, I like people who agree with me especially after I have pointed out their errors!!!

Babble say ~

2 Corinthians

6:14
Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers: for what fellowship hath righteousness with unrighteousness? and what communion hath light with darkness?

6:15
And what concord hath Christ with Belial? or what part hath he that believeth with an infidel?

Hey ~ me too!
May I most cordially make a suggestion?

If you quote the Bible, please do not use King James version!!

Incidentally, the KJ Version was never actually authorised. When he read it, King James did not like it!!
