The thing I keep wondering... did your kid acctually have an erection? Maybe that might help you in deciding if it's exploration or pleasure. Crikey... I didn't get an erection till I was 12.

Oh yes, but any parent with male children should be able to attest to the fact that boys regularly get erections from birth (in fact I once saw a wonderful picture of a baby in the womb with one thumb in his mouth and the other hand grasping an erect penis).

My first memory of being aware of an erection was at 4 or 5 at nursery school (kindergarten) when I looked down and thought "whats that?" then promptly pissed in my face!

He's only six, let him explore himself. On the other hand if he is grabbing at himself in public, embarrass him by asking "Do you need to go to the bathroom?" until he stops. Works for both my boys. They get indignant and find something else to do with their hands.

I'm not sure about the orgasm side, as I said earlier I had my first around 9 or 10, but erections are not at all governed by age. Nor are the pleasurable feelings garnered by playing with one!

Am opining as a male. Though unavoidable, masturbation has an unfavorable side effect for the male when it comes to hetero-sexual relations. Usually the "wankler"? is training himself to ejaculate as soon as possible since at an early age, he has no idea what a woman needs to be satisfied. A masturbator who did not enhance his awareness in time would likely be a premature ejaculator. There are remedies though if one of the couple knows better.
