Thumbs up

An excerpt from excreationist's quote of religioustolerance.org:
Quote:
...So tightly linked is Saturday to the Sabbath that in over 100 languages (one source says 160) the name for Saturday is some variation of the word "Sabbath." (English is one exception; Saturday is named after the Roman Pagan god Saturn).
Excreationist, thanks for posting this. Ever since I learned the Spanish word for 'Saturday' was 'Sabado' (how do you insert accented characters anyway?) I had always wondered why the Sabbath wasn't on the day labeled Sabbath-day. Very enlightening.

For example, the infalibility of the pope. I forgot the actual date, but it is less than 100 years old.

Conversely, how about commanding things like gender equality, valuing diversity and the respect of basic human rights. Throw in a little basic information about nutrition, sanitation, injury prevention and medical care and history could have been much different. Why didn't this supposed all-knowing god use a page or two in his 1600 page bible to really help the human condition? Apparently he isn't too smart or simply doesn't give a sh**.

Obviously, you are unfamiliar with some of the more quotidian aspects of the Torah:

Quote:
Leviticus 13

Regulations About Infectious Skin Diseases

1 The Lord said to Moses and Aaron, 2 "When anyone has a swelling or a rash or a bright spot on his skin that may become an infectious skin disease, [1] he must be brought to Aaron the priest or to one of his sons [2] who is a priest. 3 The priest is to examine the sore on his skin, and if the hair in the sore has turned white and the sore appears to be more than skin deep, [3] it is an infectious skin disease. When the priest examines him, he shall pronounce him ceremonially unclean. 4 If the spot on his skin is white but does not appear to be more than skin deep and the hair in it has not turned white, the priest is to put the infected person in isolation for seven days. 5 On the seventh day the priest is to examine him, and if he sees that the sore is unchanged and has not spread in the skin, he is to keep him in isolation another seven days. 6 On the seventh day the priest is to examine him again, and if the sore has faded and has not spread in the skin, the priest shall pronounce him clean; it is only a rash. The man must wash his clothes, and he will be clean. 7 But if the rash does spread in his skin after he has shown himself to the priest to be pronounced clean, he must appear before the priest again. 8 The priest is to examine him, and if the rash has spread in the skin, he shall pronounce him unclean; it is an infectious disease.
9 "When anyone has an infectious skin disease, he must be brought to the priest. 10 The priest is to examine him, and if there is a white swelling in the skin that has turned the hair white and if there is raw flesh in the swelling, 11 it is a chronic skin disease and the priest shall pronounce him unclean. He is not to put him in isolation, because he is already unclean.
12 "If the disease breaks out all over his skin and, so far as the priest can see, it covers all the skin of the infected person from head to foot, 13 the priest is to examine him, and if the disease has covered his whole body, he shall pronounce that person clean. Since it has all turned white, he is clean. 14 But whenever raw flesh appears on him, he will be unclean. 15 When the priest sees the raw flesh, he shall pronounce him unclean. The raw flesh is unclean; he has an infectious disease. 16 Should the raw flesh change and turn white, he must go to the priest. 17 The priest is to examine him, and if the sores have turned white, the priest shall pronounce the infected person clean; then he will be clean.
18 "When someone has a boil on his skin and it heals, 19 and in the place where the boil was, a white swelling or reddish-white spot appears, he must present himself to the priest. 20 The priest is to examine it, and if it appears to be more than skin deep and the hair in it has turned white, the priest shall pronounce him unclean. It is an infectious skin disease that has broken out where the boil was. 21 But if, when the priest examines it, there is no white hair in it and it is not more than skin deep and has faded, then the priest is to put him in isolation for seven days. 22 If it is spreading in the skin, the priest shall pronounce him unclean; it is infectious. 23 But if the spot is unchanged and has not spread, it is only a scar from the boil, and the priest shall pronounce him clean.
24 "When someone has a burn on his skin and a reddish-white or white spot appears in the raw flesh of the burn, 25 the priest is to examine the spot, and if the hair in it has turned white, and it appears to be more than skin deep, it is an infectious disease that has broken out in the burn. The priest shall pronounce him unclean; it is an infectious skin disease. 26 But if the priest examines it and there is no white hair in the spot and if it is not more than skin deep and has faded, then the priest is to put him in isolation for seven days. 27 On the seventh day the priest is to examine him, and if it is spreading in the skin, the priest shall pronounce him unclean; it is an infectious skin disease. 28 If, however, the spot is unchanged and has not spread in the skin but has faded, it is a swelling from the burn, and the priest shall pronounce him clean; it is only a scar from the burn.
29 "If a man or woman has a sore on the head or on the chin, 30 the priest is to examine the sore, and if it appears to be more than skin deep and the hair in it is yellow and thin, the priest shall pronounce that person unclean; it is an itch, an infectious disease of the head or chin. 31 But if, when the priest examines this kind of sore, it does not seem to be more than skin deep and there is no black hair in it, then the priest is to put the infected person in isolation for seven days. 32 On the seventh day the priest is to examine the sore, and if the itch has not spread and there is no yellow hair in it and it does not appear to be more than skin deep, 33 he must be shaved except for the diseased area, and the priest is to keep him in isolation another seven days. 34 On the seventh day the priest is to examine the itch, and if it has not spread in the skin and appears to be no more than skin deep, the priest shall pronounce him clean. He must wash his clothes, and he will be clean. 35 But if the itch does spread in the skin after he is pronounced clean, 36 the priest is to examine him, and if the itch has spread in the skin, the priest does not need to look for yellow hair; the person is unclean. 37 If, however, in his judgment it is unchanged and black hair has grown in it, the itch is healed. He is clean, and the priest shall pronounce him clean.
38 "When a man or woman has white spots on the skin, 39 the priest is to examine them, and if the spots are dull white, it is a harmless rash that has broken out on the skin; that person is clean.
40 "When a man has lost his hair and is bald, he is clean. 41 If he has lost his hair from the front of his scalp and has a bald forehead, he is clean. 42 But if he has a reddish-white sore on his bald head or forehead, it is an infectious disease breaking out on his head or forehead. 43 The priest is to examine him, and if the swollen sore on his head or forehead is reddish-white like an infectious skin disease, 44 the man is diseased and is unclean. The priest shall pronounce him unclean because of the sore on his head.
45 "The person with such an infectious disease must wear torn clothes, let his hair be unkempt, [4] cover the lower part of his face and cry out, 'Unclean! Unclean!' 46 As long as he has the infection he remains unclean. He must live alone; he must live outside the camp.

Regulations About Mildew
47 "If any clothing is contaminated with mildew-any woolen or linen clothing, 48 any woven or knitted material of linen or wool, any leather or anything made of leather- 49 and if the contamination in the clothing, or leather, or woven or knitted material, or any leather article, is greenish or reddish, it is a spreading mildew and must be shown to the priest. 50 The priest is to examine the mildew and isolate the affected article for seven days. 51 On the seventh day he is to examine it, and if the mildew has spread in the clothing, or the woven or knitted material, or the leather, whatever its use, it is a destructive mildew; the article is unclean. 52 He must burn up the clothing, or the woven or knitted material of wool or linen, or any leather article that has the contamination in it, because the mildew is destructive; the article must be burned up.
53 "But if, when the priest examines it, the mildew has not spread in the clothing, or the woven or knitted material, or the leather article, 54 he shall order that the contaminated article be washed. Then he is to isolate it for another seven days. 55 After the affected article has been washed, the priest is to examine it, and if the mildew has not changed its appearance, even though it has not spread, it is unclean. Burn it with fire, whether the mildew has affected one side or the other. 56 If, when the priest examines it, the mildew has faded after the article has been washed, he is to tear the contaminated part out of the clothing, or the leather, or the woven or knitted material. 57 But if it reappears in the clothing, or in the woven or knitted material, or in the leather article, it is spreading, and whatever has the mildew must be burned with fire. 58 The clothing, or the woven or knitted material, or any leather article that has been washed and is rid of the mildew, must be washed again, and it will be clean."
59 These are the regulations concerning contamination by mildew in woolen or linen clothing, woven or knitted material, or any leather article, for pronouncing them clean or unclean.
and more, from Leviticus 14:

Quote:
Cleansing From Mildew
33 The Lord said to Moses and Aaron, 34 "When you enter the land of Canaan, which I am giving you as your possession, and I put a spreading mildew in a house in that land, 35 the owner of the house must go and tell the priest, 'I have seen something that looks like mildew in my house.' 36 The priest is to order the house to be emptied before he goes in to examine the mildew, so that nothing in the house will be pronounced unclean. After this the priest is to go in and inspect the house. 37 He is to examine the mildew on the walls, and if it has greenish or reddish depressions that appear to be deeper than the surface of the wall, 38 the priest shall go out the doorway of the house and close it up for seven days. 39 On the seventh day the priest shall return to inspect the house. If the mildew has spread on the walls, 40 he is to order that the contaminated stones be torn out and thrown into an unclean place outside the town. 41 He must have all the inside walls of the house scraped and the material that is scraped off dumped into an unclean place outside the town. 42 Then they are to take other stones to replace these and take new clay and plaster the house.
43 "If the mildew reappears in the house after the stones have been torn out and the house scraped and plastered, 44 the priest is to go and examine it and, if the mildew has spread in the house, it is a destructive mildew; the house is unclean. 45 It must be torn down-its stones, timbers and all the plaster-and taken out of the town to an unclean place.
46 "Anyone who goes into the house while it is closed up will be unclean till evening. 47 Anyone who sleeps or eats in the house must wash his clothes.
48 "But if the priest comes to examine it and the mildew has not spread after the house has been plastered, he shall pronounce the house clean, because the mildew is gone. 49 To purify the house he is to take two birds and some cedar wood, scarlet yarn and hyssop. 50 He shall kill one of the birds over fresh water in a clay pot. 51 Then he is to take the cedar wood, the hyssop, the scarlet yarn and the live bird, dip them into the blood of the dead bird and the fresh water, and sprinkle the house seven times. 52 He shall purify the house with the bird's blood, the fresh water, the live bird, the cedar wood, the hyssop and the scarlet yarn. 53 Then he is to release the live bird in the open fields outside the town. In this way he will make atonement for the house, and it will be clean."
54 These are the regulations for any infectious skin disease, for an itch, 55 for mildew in clothing or in a house, 56 and for a swelling, a rash or a bright spot, 57 to determine when something is clean or unclean.
These are the regulations for infectious skin diseases and mildew.
And don't forget this advice from Deuteronomy 23:
Quote:
12 Designate a place outside the camp where you can go to relieve yourself. 13 As part of your equipment have something to dig with, and when you relieve yourself, dig a hole and cover up your excrement.

EX 32:14
"And the Lord repented of the evil which he thought to do unto his people."

(So the God of the Bible does think evil thoughts.)

EX 32:19
"And it came to pass, as soon as he came nigh unto the camp, that he saw the calf, and the dancing: and Moses' anger waxed hot, and he cast the tables out of his hands, and he brake them beneath the mount."

(Would a man chosen by an all-knowing and all-powerful God simply brake the tablets written on by the finger of this God? Obviously Moses didn't hold his God in very high respect, nor did he fear him.)

EX 32:27
"And he said unto them, Thus saith the Lord God of Israel, Put every man his sword by his side, and go in and out from gate to gate throughout the camp, and slay every man his brother, and every man his companion, and evey man his neighbour."

(Now this man chosen by this same God orders the murders/slaughter of men simply because they are a brother, companion or neighbour? And exactly how would this order be accomplished without everyone "murdering" everyone else?)

EX 32:28
"And the children of Levi did according to the word of Moses: and there fell of the people that day about three thousand men."

(All because the Lord ordered it? Or did Moses lie about what God had ordered...like so many clerics today lie about what the Bible/Koran actually say.)

(Obviously when this tale was told around the evening campfires, the myth teller was smashed out of his sheep herding mind. However, there can be little doubt that the God of the Bible was/is no better than an ancient Osama bin Laden named Moses. Need more examples? Try these!)

http://www.tylwythteg.com/enemies/enemies.html

Ezekiel 9:4-6. And the Lord said unto him... [Remember, this is GOD talking!] Slay utterly old and young, both maids, and little children, and women; ...and begin at my sanctuary.

I Samuel 15:2,3. Thus saith the Lord of hosts, [this is GOD talking again!] ...Now go and smite Amalek, and utterly destroy all that they have, and spare them not; but slay both man and woman, infant and suckling, ox and sheep, camel and ass.

Isaiah 13:15-16. Everyone that is found shall be thrust through; ...Their children also shall be dashed to pieces before their eyes; their houses shall be spoiled, and their wives ravished.

Hosea 13:16. Their infants shall be dashed in pieces and their women with child shall be ripped up.

Numbers 31:17-18. [This one is Moses talking; he wants the young virgins spared -- for his soldiers:] Now therefore kill every male among the little ones, and kill every woman that hath known man by lying with him. But all the women children, that have not known a man by lying with him, keep alive for yourselves.

Psalm 137:9. Happy shall he be, that taketh and dasheth thy little ones against the stones. [the enemy's children.]

By the way, their are MORE passages like this.
Is this the "God of Love"? Do the Ten Commandments apply only to a religious person's friends and maybe their congregation? Beware -- too many religious people are functionally insane, sometimes homicidally, and are socially psychopathic, criminals in the community of mankind.

(If 9/11 hasn't validated the above remark, than nothing will short of the demise of all humanity.)

ShottleBop:
Part of what you quoted is quite interesting:

from Leviticus 14:
Quote:
48 But if the priest comes to examine it and the mildew has not spread after the house has been plastered, he shall pronounce the house clean, because the mildew is gone. In this way he will make atonement for the house, and it will be clean.
Maybe the house was sinful or cursed or something and the sacrifice calms God down or drives out some demons.

You missed out on the first half of Leviticus 14 and that has some rituals that are even more bizarre.

My favourite hygiene related passage is probably this one:

Leviticus 14:15-16
Quote:
Anyone, whether native-born or alien, who eats anything found dead or torn by wild animals must wash his clothes and bathe with water, and he will be ceremonially unclean till evening; then he will be clean. But if he does not wash his clothes and bathe himself, he will be held responsible.
This implies that after washing their clothes and having a bath, the person would be fine the next day - i.e. be immune to food poisoning. (The dead meat could be really old and diseased)

It's called tough love or something. And that was the Old Testament. God was a fascist back then. Well he is too in Revelation. But he loves people most of the time in the Gospels.

Thank you. I already have that URL in my Favorites list. Here is a partial repost of a discussion I had with Ron Garrett in the Church-State forum about the 10 Commandments. The unspoken point being the selectivity with which some Christian cults use OT dogma to support NT beliefs...while all the time claiming the inerrancy of the "entire" garbled tome in order to be able to justify this selectivity. It is the blatant hypocrisy of this type of Christian that I find so sad. Unfortunately, that is the type who now controls the U.S.Government.

>>>>>>>>>>>>&g t;>>>>>>>>>>>> >>>>>>

[Buffman] (Layman's aside): Do Christians see any difference in the three series of OT Commandments and the abbreviated ones found at MK 10:18-19 and ROM 13:7-9? (I realize that my question is only indirectly related to C-S, but when discussing the validity and value of the so-called 10 Commandments, placed in the public square with overt government support, with overly zealous Christians, it would seem to indicate that the Church Fathers recognized the vicious and vengeful God of the OT and attempted to recreate Him in a new, more benevolent, image in the writings of the NT. Thus, which Commandments should Christians obey? "All" those found in the OT or just those in the NT?)

[Ron Garrett's response] On your questions: My general experience is that a minority of Christians of the modern fundamentalist stripe spend endless hours in "Bible Study" which in fact is largely rote memorization of texts out of context and used for absolute dictums and argumentation. The vast majority could not even tell you where any version of the decalogue can be found in the book. most believers of any stripe make an emotional commitment to the culture and community they are embracing with no understanding whatever of the doctrine they are affirming sight unseen.
MK 10:18-19 is of course a short summary of Exodus and Deuteronomy passages that skips graven images, the Sabbath and adultery, having other gods, though one could broadly infer "defraud" as covering adultery, though without much in the way of textual support. Jesus was a Sabbath-breaker, so seems natural he'd leave that out. ROM 13 is viewed as a self-evident summary, not an exhaustive listing.
One they often don't seem to notice is Micah 6:8,
"He hath shewed thee, O man, what is good; and what doth the LORD require of thee, but to do justly, and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with thy God?"
It always seemed to me that perfect conduct is summed up in this teaching. Be just and love mercy. Live your life with humility. Justice, mercy and humility in modern fundamentalism are rarely considered with the weight they deserve. I've always thought if someone could embrace these principles nothing more need be said.

>>>>>>>>>>>>&g t;>>>>>>>>>>>> >>

Ron Garrett's academic and experience credentials are quite impressive.

(ADDED extract from Garrett letter.)

"I cannot summarize or replicate for you here that decades long journey I have taken from youthful conversion, lay ministry, graduate degrees in theology and sociology, ordination, pastoring, and doctoral studies in biblical literature and church history that led me to reject the faith in order to convince you that you have simply been a willing participant in your deception."

Ten is way too many, it should be only one. The golden rule. Not the version found in the bible, they got that wrong too.

Don't "Treat others as you would have them treat you".

Treat others as they would want to be treated.

Each person filters life differently. Therefore, the first rule implies that people will be happy if treat them in a way that would make you happy. Unfortunately, what makes one person happy may make another miserable. If you learn enough about someone that you can treat them the way they want to be treated your chances of getting along are much greater. If in doubt or they are just an asshole, leave them alone.

I was surprised at the response I got when applying this to my life.
