bonduca,

Does anyone remember the terrifying tale of "death by unga bunga?"

Hahaha. I wonder if there are variant versions on the nonsense term "unga bunga?" Anyone ever hear the story with a different word in there?

It all makes sense now! Pesci, you've got to
try this salsa they sell at the store (I know
that Safeway has it). It's called "Religious
Experience". The hottest is called "Wrath of
God". Really good stuff! Guaranteed to clear
your sinuses!

Aaayyay!
Today, after a hefty swig of "Wrath of God" (thank you, Kosh), I attempted to read aloud the above line. What came forth as my tongue spaketh was the following:
Quote:
"And to those who would deceive the true believer into believing that they believe not the true gospel truth of this belief, but the apparently true belief of the non-believer infidel, say unto them, 'Repent, this belief, for this belief is not the true belief of the real believer, nay that be the belief of falsity and thus you will be forever forced to believe the unbelievable; that raspberries are really small chickens'"
A web search found these very words to have come from newly discovered scrolls. <a href="http://www.geocities.com/ipuprophecy/fragment.html" target="_blank">see!</a>

Don't you think that the 'tower of babble' and possibly even the 'speaking in tongues' was a way to explain the various languages? Just like the old stories told in Papua New Guinea about how two mountains got into an argument and threw boulders at each other was used to explain how this huge field was littered with large rocks. At least that is the way I have always looked at this form of blatent BS.

As already explained, the babbling going on in these churches is just babbling. The original reference to speaking in tongues in Acts was that the disciples were speaking in actual languages understood by the foreign visitors who had come to Jerusalem to celebrate the feast of Pentacost. The current babbling has nothing in common with speaking in tongues as recorded in Acts.

As earlier posted, if this were being accurately practiced today, they would be speaking perfect German or Spanish or French or whatever (without having learned the language beforehand), and they should keep their mouth shut unless someone who spoke that language was present to translate for them.
