My local libraries (and I hope all UK libraries) put religion and pseudoscience in the same section. It always makes me smile to see A N Wilsons Jebus books alongside books about astrology or palmistry.

I've considered that, and keep saying I'll do it, but I'm afraid that I'd get that same reaction.

On a related matter, is it my imagination, or are the Science sections in most of the bookstores I frequent shrinking? It seems like they're getting smaller and smaller, while the Religion ("Inspirational") and New Age sections get bigger and bigger.
Actually, its worse than that. The books being sold in the religion sections are garbage! Even at Borders or Barnes and Nobles, they sell Matthew Henry's commentary of the Bible, but you won't see a word by Noth, von Rad, Gunkel, Wellhausen or any legitimate bible scholar. Last time in Borders, I commented outloud that this stuff was all garbage. A guy next to me asked what church I went to. I couldn't help but laugh at him. Second time in two days someone had come up to me on religion. I didn't have the heart to do to him, what I did to the first guy.

In a local Book's a Million where I live the science section is crammed all the way in the back in a small corner. And I mean *all* subjects of science. However just the *bible* display in this store is around 4 times larger.

And you still have Behe's books taking up space next to people like Hawking. (remember, it's all crammed together)

Not quite.

Actually I used the Jacob and Esau story to show how God uses deceit. Poor guy had to pull out his notes. But that isn't on the list! Must default to "Jesus gave us mercy.

He should have known in the beginning it wasn't going to be good. He asked if we were saved. I said, "Well the jewish don't need to be saved."

you're absolutely right. the average American is too intellectually lazy to even attempt to understand science, and therefore bookstores make little money off of science books. it's really unfortunate. Sappy religous books sell like hotcakes, again due to intellectual laziness.

by the way, I like the idea of reshelving creationist books. I'll do that next time I go to Borders.

I growled at one bookstore manager because "Icons of Evolution" was the ONLY biology book they had in the whole place. I mean, they had about 15 science books total, and Wells's sterling effort was one of them. I did suggest that they reshelve it under Religion if they really had to carry it, and in the meantime perhaps they might have heard of a guy called Stephen Jay Gould? Last I checked there was nothing by Gould but at least Wells's book wasn't there.

I found a copy of Dembski's "Mere Creation" in the science section at the local Borders bookstore a couple of days ago. I figured that an overworked clerk mis-filed it, so I transferred it to its rightful place in the mythology section (alphabetically by author); it ended up right between two books entitled "Bengali Folk Tales" and "The Little Encyclopaedia of Superstitions".

I'm always glad to provide whatever assistance I can...

The stupidity is spreading here as well. I found books by Behe, Wells and Milton (RicharD milton, sharttering the myths of Darwinism) in the science section.

Thumbs up

What we really need to do is write more first class books like Carl Zimmers. I can't imagine any rational person chosing a load of horse fecces like Wells over something that's an intellectual feast like Zimmer's book.

But then again...creationist? Rational? Nawww.
