Good point. Confusing admirable men and women with the principles that helped form their noble character is the nontheistic equivalent of idolatry. We should always remember that good character is open to all of us, and not monopolized by any particular individual.

That said, for fictional heros I'll chose Howard Roark, though Gandalf the Grey comes back from the dead as Gandalf the White in the Two Towers movie this December. Move over, Dumblewhoever! Gandalf could kick your ass around Middle-earth and back!

wor·ship Pronunciation Key (wûrshp)
n.

1a. The reverent love and devotion accorded a deity, an idol, or a sacred object.
1b. The ceremonies, prayers, or other religious forms by which this love is expressed.
2. Ardent devotion; adoration.
Using meaning #2, I worship my family! (I know, it's sappy, but it's true.) Otherwise, no worship for me, especially in the sense of meanings 1a and 1b.

John Lennon is actually a character I sometimes feel like worshipping (in my more irrational moods). The guy was a prick, a sometime wife-beater, and a lot of other awful things. But he takes on a messianic character. There is something iconic about the image of him around the time of the Beatles' break-up -- the granny glasses and the shoulder-length hair and the beard, part hippie god, part irascible rabbi. I had a very vivid dream about him once. I guess early martyrdom will do that (viz. Kennedy, Lincoln, Jim Morrison, Jesus, etc.). It lends a mystic aspect to a person.

(Lennon, by the way, would be the first person to loathe the idea of anyone worshipping him. Well, late Lennon would. In the early '60s I suspect he rather got a kick out of it.)

Cool

My navel, oops that is what I contemplate. Worship is like giving someone or something power over you. I'll pass.
