Who would you worship?
If you could start a religion based on any historical or fictional person, who would you chose and why?
Myself, I might go for Leonardo da Vinci. We have a good collection of his writings, much of it quite intelligent. (I disagree with some of his opinions on sex, however.) |

I think that the best form of religion would be to vigorously debate ethics and morals, probably in the same vein as modern liberal Judaism.

Well, since you allow fictional characters (some would argue historically-based), I would say King Arthur. Following a honorable and compassionate paradigm would please most people. And I could make a living illustrating knights in shining armour.

Worshipping Tolkien might be fun. On the other hand, you could argue that people already do that, so...
Hmmm. -Perchance. |

Worshipping Tolkien's mythology wouldn't be all that bad, actually. Followers would value the smallest of existence all the way up to the most noble aspirations. Tolkien's genius was taking ordinary and making it a paradise via the Shire. And Gandalf, as the guardian angel of the series, is a compassionite representation of imagined supernature.

Hmm, since I'm in the process of reading his Ethics, I would say Aristotle, and toss in a bit of Ovid for the poetry and mythology.
