If there's no God, what is all of this?
Hi everyone,
I thought I'd submit my topic to this thread. A bit of background, I'm a Christian, but not really a bible thumper. Been very hurt by the church and feel it limits freethought. I disagree with many of its dogmas. But, basically I believe in God. So, here's my question. If God, doesn't exist, what is life? What is the universe? Why and how is it you have a small blue ball that happens to be the only planet for miles/kilometers that supports life, and happens to have the right elements? Is all of this beauty and intelligence just a fluke? Please don't mistake this post for a bible thumping pro-God argument. I'd just like to hear your opinions and philosophies on the issue. I find the board a very interesting place for theological and philosophical discussions. Lawrence |

Bro, we are in the same situation. Angry at organized religion but believers of God. I also asked one agnostic what purpose is there in life if God does not exist...he said that he doesn't know....as far he is concerned, he has his own personal purposes....
For me bro, the very purpose of life is living.....this I can reason by my finite knowledge. We won't know the ultimate nature of reality as long as we are limited in knowledge. Maybe death will provide the answer...maybe not....but the time that I will spend here, I will experience and enjoy. Email me if you'd like so we can talk some more. Anyway, read this link....It's your same dilemma.... http://forums.christiansunite.com/in...;threadid=2507 |

In my opinion, the universe does not need external meaning or purpose. It's valuable in itself.
OK, there may be some "higher purpose", but I'm not sure if we humans are ever able to find it - our capabilities are so limited, after all. But I think life is valuable even if we don't find anything "higher". I think everybody gives a meaning to his/her own life. It's not a duty, it's a priviledge. Of course, many people think otherwise |

the dictionary of all scriptures and myths by gaskell at amazon, com explains how to interpret ancient scriptures like the bible, which is greek mythology.
people dont live in fish , axe heads dont float on water, and burning bushes dont talk, not if youre sober anyway. But the bible is a most valid book, if you understand it , you will be amazed, like the speed of light is in the bible, the 22 chrosomes, the splitting of the atom, the zodiac, orion, pliades etc, aquarius, the man with the pitcher of water. all explained at www.hiddenmeanings.com nothing to believe, you will know. have a good one [Edited to remove any possible copyrighted material - BJM] |

What happens when there are different interpretations of the Bible? Which one is right? How do we determine what is literal and what's not?
Ad infinitum! |

On the other hand when we or the bible or any other book makes a straight forward statement its pretty clear that we/it means what it says. for instance the bible says god is not a man, I declare to you that god is light. this is pretty straightforward. but sackcloths, hairy men etc, look for the metaphysical interpretation. hope that helps |

4:12 When thou tillest the ground, it shall not henceforth yield unto thee her strength; a fugitive and a vagabond shalt thou be in the earth.
4:13 And Cain said unto the LORD, My punishment is greater than I can bear. 4:14 Behold, thou hast driven me out this day from the face of the earth; and from thy face shall I be hid; and I shall be a fugitive and a vagabond in the earth; and it shall come to pass, that every one that findeth me shall slay me. 4:15 And the LORD said unto him, Therefore whosoever slayeth Cain, vengeance shall be taken on him sevenfold. And the LORD set a mark upon Cain, lest any finding him should kill him. 4:16 And Cain went out from the presence of the LORD, and dwelt in the land of Nod, on the east of Eden. 4:17 And Cain knew his wife; and she conceived, and bare Enoch: and he builded a city, and called the name of the city, after the name of his son, Enoch. 4:18 And unto Enoch was born Irad: and Irad begat Mehujael: and Mehujael begat Methusael: and Methusael begat Lamech. that every one that findeth me shall slay me. Notice it says, everyone that finds me shall sley me, how can you sley one person over and over ? so who is cain and who is abel ? first of all they never existed, its a story about you and I , can you figure it out? and paul died daily. what is all this crap then? |

I therefore submit to you your own language, in symbols (dark sayings). Nothing means
what it says, but you understand all of it. He's off the wall It's apiece of cake He spilled the beans he shot off his mouth (ouch that must of heart) She's green with envy your going against the grain we have run amuck She's the apple of his eye I'll take a back seat (not in the back of the room) Your barking up the wrong tree(a dog)? Stop beating around the bush (a gardner)? Lets get down to brass tacks To draw on a dead horse (old navy) My pigs flying baker (also old navy) bet you dont know what that one. |
