Yes Susheel, there are goons of asorted size in the various hindu groups, more so now that it has become powerful. That is exactly why it is so important to keep the organization on a leash.

As a white dude from far-off Canada, let me say that I find it immensely valuable to have a forum where people are affected by fundamentalists anywhere in the world can share their stories.

Hinduwoman,
And you actually believe that his is possible...that they can be controlled. I wouldn't be too sure. History has more often shown that once similar fringe groups are given legitimacy they more or less enter the mainstream and are soon in the forefront. For example...the rise of christianity in Rome and more recently the Third Reich in Germany. I guess the BJP is also coming to realise this rather unpleasant truth. The RSS stands for the Rashtriya Seva Sangh, a nationalist group espousing right wing Hindu ideals that arose during the freedom struggle in the early 20th century. I guess you would find quite a bit (for and against) about it on the net if you do a Google search. |

Yes, Susheel, it is possible to control RSS because it is not a homogenous group and if the average citizen tries.
But the problem is as long as Islamic terrorism and efforts to whitewash it, remain prevalent, the average hindu is going to regard it as their protector. |

who's afraid of the RSS (Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh= National Volunteers Union)? I, for one, am s***t scared.
after the gujarat pogrom i've developed a near hysterical attitude towards the rss. a guy in my lab was working in ahmedabad when the rss-- idealogues, strategeist, goons and irregulars-- were going about carrying voters' lists and hunting down muslims-- literally. he heard the screams.... he was travelling in a bus that was stopped, a muslim occupant made to get out and BEHEADED before the terrified crowd by a mob of 20-25 RSS-types. who says i oppose the rss? not me, no siree. i'm grovelling at their feet, begging them to spare my life and forgive my tresspasses for having dared to say a word or so now and then against them. they are constructing a new country here, and i hope that i won't be killed painfully because i don't like their ideas. SCRATCH THAT! it sounded too much like opposition.... |

That is what I mean.
Ask yourself why the RSS gained so much power when in 1980 it could get its party only 2 seats. Back then it did not have the manpower or support to do such things. Now it is everywhere and growing stronger day by day --- and the silent majority is silent precisely because not all of them could bring themselves to condemn it totally. Everyone agrees that the killing of the muslims are bad and they go on to say that why does no one mention the hindus that were killed by muslim mobs and hindu women that are raped? Do one sided reporting, go on saying that Islam is a religion of tolerance and peace, deny what Islamic invaders did to hindus, go on giving perks to muslims in the name of minority rights, and ultimately it is the RSS that benefits. As for your being afraid, don't worry, you are in good company with our secularists and progressives. Fernandes waded in among the mob and actually brought some measure of control. (Remember Fernandes, the pet hate of our intelligentsia, after the RSS decided he was the example of genuine Indian, though he is a Christian?). And what did the great leaders of secular intellectuals do? The massacres were taking place in Gujarat. so they marched at the opposite end of the country where it was absolutely safe. So long as the so called intellectual's arsenal consists in nothing more than being Islamically correct and lectures in conferences rather than actually doing something concrete, I am afraid you will have to grovel before RSS. |
