Paul instructed the early Christians to have someone translating the tongues (this was another gift). That should allow for an easy test. If two translators can't come up with the same meaning in a controlled test, then you have your answer. Unless the Holy Spirit is lying to one...

It's funny how no pentacostal is ever "moved by the spirit" to speak in perfect German.

If this would be of interest, on another board someone claimed to speak in tongues (actually, one tongue) and gave me samples. Of course, he can't translate them yet (he says).

I asked him more. Apparently "a" is always /a/, both "i" and "ee" are /i/, "ai" is /e/, I'm not sure about e but I assume it's /E/. The "r" is trilled. He says that English is his native language. He studied French, but forgot it all.

Hope someone can do more with this than me!

Can I add my twopence worth to regret the loss of real languages spoken in tongues, which are now lost to us, killed by PC. How soon we forget.

There was a time when no self respecting hollywood Tarzan movie was without a full complement of savages fluent in the lost language of Mumbo Jumbo. Where have they all gone? Did the hole in the ozone layer cause their curiously oily blacks skins to form malignant cancers and kill them all? Are they in some Rwandan mass grave? You never seem to see these strangely white eye-lidded Africans anywhere nowadays. Perhaps their language is gone for good, and science will never discover the meaning of the phrases 'Unga Bunga' or 'Ug'. How sad.

Boro Nut

PS - I think it was Polynesian in origin, as they sounded just like this in old King Kong films too.

Mageth,

You're right, I should hand over my theory, the only problem is the only time I have access to a computer is at work and sometimes I don't have time. I will, though, present my thoughts, I needed to ask because my girlfriend goes to this church and she begged me to go and I did and I need to explain to her that she is living in a lie.

P.S. thanks for everyone's help so far, I knew I could come here for help.

I ate two habanero chilis yesterday in rapid succession. Not only was it a highly spiritual experience, but my tongue had developed a mind of its own. Since my boss had given me the chilis in the first place, I was lucky he was able to interpret the gibberish that resulted when I tried to say words like "refrigerator" and "requirement spec".

Is glossalalia supposed to be accompanied by great bouts of giggling?

Just try and say it: glossalalia. Admit it, you want to giggle.
