In all seriousness, I can understand vengeance that targets the guilty party, but vengeance that targets non-guilty people is a strict no-no. I guess that's what I was trying to get at in response to meritocrat's claim that "Vengeance is never wrong."

Vengeance that targets other than the culprit, is not vengeance.

Isn't our justice system that imprisons (and occasionally executes) criminals at least partly dealing out vengeance? Sure, it also protects society by making sure the criminal cannot commit further crimes, but isn't it also a form of punishment? If so, then vengeance is a critical and common aspect of our society.
