Isn't our justice system that imprisons (and occasionally executes) criminals at least partly dealing out vengeance? Sure, it also protects society by making sure the criminal cannot commit further crimes, but isn't it also a form of punishment? If so, then vengeance is a critical and common aspect of our society.
