Why I am an ex christian
I have been a so called christian for many years until I found this site
http://web2.iadfw.net/capella/aguide/ The bible really stunned me on what the bible really said. You will find that the earth was supposed to have been created flat by the bible authors(I thought that GOD wrote the Old Testament? If he did than the images from NASA are doctored) As you go through the site it may shock you and find that religion only picks out what you want to hear, not what is credible. So I took a copy of the site to my local priest and he explained it away and he told me that if I question the Bible and the church I will be ex-communicated .I told him to ex-communicate me and he did. I thought about things and decided that evolution can explain many things that the bible does not(like the dinosaurs, which we for a fact that they did exist). In summary the bible is the writings of an ancient people and their so called creator (which may or may not exist). Besides if I am wrong and GOD really does exist he does not know how to write. |

Greetings, Mark, and welcome!
Sounds like you've just taken a big step. I know how hard it can be, so my hat's off to you for your willingness to be honest with yourself, even when it means walking away from something you've long accepted to be true and possibly built your life around. I'm curious why you classify yourself as a an ex "so-called Christian." Judging from your opening post, you'll immediately enjoy and benefit from discussions in our Biblical Criticism and Archaeology Forum. The points you've mentioned so far are only tapping the surface. Since you OP is not really a discussion of Existence of God(s), I'm going to move it to a more appropriate forum. It looks like an introduction, so you'll find it in the Welcome Forum. Enjoy your stay! d |

Yeah. It's hard. I was a fundy and in training to be a pastor. When I first came to this place I was a xian. now I'm not. I think there are things in the bible that are useful, but it's dangerous to actually believe all it says. Hope you enjoy freethinking.
So, are you an athiest, or an agnostic? |

I doubt the existance of God now
Because if he wrote the Bible he would have said that the earth was a sphere or ball not flat .
During the past 300 years we have found many dinosaur bone fossils from the dinosaurs that lived many many years ago,and within the past 50 years we traveled through space and found out that the earth and other planets are a round sphere or ball(remember christopher columbus did not fall off the edge of the earth),not as GOD supposed to have written (if the bible is the word of GOD)I guess you could say that I am an ex-christian because I was ex-communicated from my church and am an atheist that believes in that man evolved. I am in chicago illinois and I watch with my children a tv program called prehistoric planet and ever since I was a child I was fascinated with dinosaurs and prehistoric creatures so are my kids. No where in the bible are dinosaurs or pre-historic creatures like dinosaurs mentioned specifically.(I doubt noah could fit them in the ark,it seems there were no archaeologists either). So who wrote the bible? man did without any inpiration of any God. I really wish that the was a God but that website really made me look in the Bible on what it really said and am sad to conclude that there is no God,but if my conclusion is wrong and God does exist then God needs to start telling us the truth because creditibility is very important. there are many cults out there that tell you what you want to hear, not what is the truth. In summary I am an newly converted atheist, and I will share my new found knowledge to dispute christianity because the truth must be known. We are on our own and when we die that is the end. One thing I noticed about refuting christianity, you make many enemies, even if the bible proves your point. |

I expect Diana will forgive me if I try to clarify what I think was her point. I think she was wondering why you called yourself a ex-so-called Christian. As in, why do you consider what you used to be not truly Christian?
This is a great place to meet people who believe like you do. I have also found that being a nontheist opens you up to ridicule. There is no accounting for the way people treat those who don't buy into their fairytale. Welcome to II. |

Thanks, Tal.
Yes, that's what I meant to ask, Mark. When I hear the expression "so-called Christian," it's almost invariably from the mouth of a holier-than-thou type sneering at a fellow believer who does not behave as the sneerer thinks he should. Hence, he isn't a "Christian," but a "so-called Christian." I've never heard anyone refer to himself as such, though. Sarcasm? d |

I say so called christian because
Since I was catholic, a form of christianity I believed in God,the dogma of the church and just went along with the program and we catholics consider ourselves christian.Without questioning anything.I just went to church on sunday and lived like the devil the rest of the week.
When I questioned the bible to my priest he did not like that I questioned the bible or the church and he filled out the forms of ex-communicating me. |

I find myself in a similar situation as you. I wasn't ex-communicated, I just stopped going to services. Why? Due to the responses I was getting from supposed 'spiritual brothers and sisters' when I questioned the accuracy of the biblical writings when viewed from an un-biased scientific point of view. They're initial response to me was that if I couldn't accept the 'literal' teachings of God, I couldn't be a Christian. They then asked if they could come over for a visit and talk to me. I said.. SURE... I'd love to have you as guests. I'm still waiting for them to show up (5 years later) I guess they were afraid to demonstrate the 'literal' writings of Mark by handling serpents and drinking poison to convince me the Bible was a 'literal piece of writing' I used to frequent www.christianforums.com frequently (see my outcast thread, lol) I've found the diversity, mannerisms, and hospitality of this forum to be much more enjoyable and civilized. Ironic... eh? |
