What would you change..
If you could "Edit" Xianity, what would you change/fix?
Lets say that you have to keep the salvation through Christ bit (which kind of implies that you're stuck with sin, heaven, and hell), but you can change the rest. How would you "design" Christianity? Myself, I'd remove entirely the requirement to witness to people. I'd remove tithing to the church and replace it with charity to the needy. I'd scrap most of the bible chapters. It would be more of a "scribbler" than a book. I'd keep the chapter of Leviticus but I'd add this text before it, Quote:

I would make it so that followers (of ALL religions, while we're at it) understood that it's all myth, parable, analogy, etc... and NOT to be taken literally.
Oh, yeah, and the witnessing thing is a good one, Jon. |

I would make it very clear that women have the same rights as men and do not need to get married/pop out babies in order to be happy or to be fulfilled.
Also, use your common sense. If someone puts a gun to your head and says, "I'll kill you if you believe in God", it's okay to think of your family who loves you and needs you and say, "God? What the f*** is that, dude?" God is mature enough to understand. Besides, if you stay alive, you can give a description to the police later; we all know that God is rather ineffective at catching criminals on His own. |

Start with some major adjustments on those ten commandments for one thing.
Thou shalt have no other gods before me. Toss this one because if he is the only god why should he care about the others. Replace it with Thou shalt use thy logic and continue to seek the truth without fear of persecution or oppression from any man. Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth. Toss this too. Replace with Thou shalt not own any man, woman or child as thy property. Honor thy father and thy mother The parents can usually defend themselves. Replace this with Parents honor thy children and protect them from harm. Do not abandon, abuse, starve or molest them. Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain. Sticks and Stones...toss this one too. Replace with Thou shalt be charitable to those less fortunate. Anything would be an improvement. For the first three commandments IMO. |

I have major problems with Christianity, but I have plenty of areas of agreement with it. That's why I'm a Religio Romana (Roman pagan) instead of an atheist. Therefore:
I would eliminate the tendency to think in terms of a war between good and evil. There are angels, but they are not all-good or all-evil. Rather, most of them are quite mediocre in their moral character, just as humans are. Hell would be eliminated, but instead of going in for universalism, I would replace it with a system that allows mediocre afterlives and annihilation, with heaven going to only a privileged few. (I think the OP allows me to do this.) I would tone down the asceticism quite a bit, and lift the bans on birth control, masturbation, etc. I would make it an article of faith, rather than a heresy, to believe that Jupiter, Postverta, and the other gods of Rome exist. I would also make it completely permissible to worship these gods. I would eliminate the view that only Christianity is an inspired religion. Now, if I had made all these changes, I would be content to be a Christian. As it is, however, I think it is more honest to reject the Christian label than to call myself a Christian and believe all that. I wish Christians would see that all these changes would increase the amount of sense their religion makes. [ March 24, 2002: Message edited by: Ojuice5001 ]
|

As a Christian, I wouldn't change revealed Scripture because it is in it that we learn about who God is and who we are to be.
However, one thing I would change is that Christians would become more loving and less hateful. God is summed in one word, love, that word should sum up our lives as well. Kevin |
