The whole point about changing the flag was the offensivness towards blacks, especially because of the circumstances of its adoption in 1956. And now they are changing the flag to something that will offend another group of people, not only atheists but religious folk that does not subscribe to the idea of an "god" such as Buddhists.
Don't forget that the proposed flag is an obvious adaptation of the CSA flag. It could still be considered offensive to African-Americans. |

That said, I don't understand any particular reason why the flag has twelve stars around the seal, why they all point outward from the seal instead of up, and I'll second that it's silly to put any text on a flag, especially by itself in the middle of a ground... and to not have it be something that references the state itself. I think the "In God we trust" bit is inappropriate and pandering... but that's half the point. They can't pick on the Blacks any more, but it's still cool to pick on the Hin-doos and the Boot-ists and the Witches... |

enemigo, thanks! I'd heard there was a new flag design out, but hadn't seen it yet. |

Actually it wouldn't since this is approximately the flag design that the African-American leaders who were pushing for the change had been proposing for the longest time until it was completely changed the last go around to the monstrocity we have today. The flag was changed not for any concern out for the Black community in Georgia, but because city buisness leaders were tired of hearing about it and didn't want a boycott.
Umm, last time I checked there were more African-Americans in the U.S. than just those in Georgia. And I would wager that there are African-Americans even in Georgia that might be offended to know that the state flag was a slightly modified version of the CSA flag. |

" And Atlanta Rep. John Noel was so upset that he couldn't get sweet tea at a restaurant that he filed a bill to make it a misdemeanor "of a high and aggravated nature" not to offer sweet tea in any restaurant that serves iced tea. The punishment for such an egregious offense? Up to 12 months in jail. "
This should be a federal law. |
