Here's the official flag of the Confederate States of America:

How is the proposed flag any less offensive than the old flag? They got rid of the Confederate battle flag and replaced it with the slightly modified flag of the CSA? And added In God We Trust to it, just to offend a few more people? Ugh.

Wow. It's not just a throwback to the vaguely-CSA 1956 flag, it's actually even closer to the original CSA flag. But most people are far better acquainted with the battle flag, so they probably figure they can slip it on past with most people saying "how nice and conventionally American-looking--red, white, blue, stars & stripes. Awww." And of course, with the vast majority of Christians populating the legislature, the tacked-on God motto's a shoo-in.

This is what happens when you get a governor named Sonny.

Default Awful!

I second the AIF.

The whole point about changing the flag was the offensivness towards blacks, especially because of the circumstances of its adoption in 1956. And now they are changing the flag to something that will offend another group of people, not only atheists but religious folk that does not subscribe to the idea of an "god" such as Buddhists.

Maybe the Georgia Infidels could write to Sonny Purdue, to the General Assembly and to the local representatives. It might not change anything but it will show them that we are out there and that we care.

If you don't want a new flag, contact your representatives and explain how much it is going to cost the state to replace all the flags. Yes, we're going to buy new flags two years after we just bought the last batch while we can't even pay our school teachers.

Vexillologists will tell you that it's a bad idea to put words of any kind on a flag -- because it won't read the same way on the reverse side.

Also, Georgia's state motto is "Wisdom, Justice, and Moderation." But that's just not good enough, is it?

Oregon solved this problem by putting a totally different design on the reverse side. It's the only state with such a flag. </flag factoid>

Not that it matters, but the flag also resembles the flags of Burma...

...and Taiwan.

Which isn't such a big deal, seeing as how those two flags already look like each other, for no apparent reason.

Meaning of the Flag of Burma

Quote:
The flag was adopted on 3 January 1974, the year when Burma became the Socialist Republic of the Burmese Federation. Since then the state has changed its name, but not its flag. The fourteen stars are for 14 states, the cog wheel and rice are for industry and agriculture.

. . .

The center of the pinion coincides with the center of the blue canton. The pinion has fourteen cogs of equal size and within it are two ears of paddy consisting of 34 grains. At the top of each cog of the pinion is a star with five vertices.

Of the three colours of the flag, red signifies courage and decisiveness, white signifies purity and virtue and dark blue signifies peace and integrity.
one star per state? Where did they get that idea?

Flag of Taiwan

Quote:
The red in the flag represents the land of China itself, with reference to the Han race which is the dominant race among the many races of China. The white sun symbolises the spirit of progress as the twelve points represent the twelve hours of the day (a traditional chinese hour = two conventional hours), and the sun on a blue field is the party flag of the Kuomintang (Nationalist Party) which still rules Taiwan today. This flag was first used in 1928.
This seems a little dated. Perhaps if Vork drops by, he can explain why Taiwan is still flying the flag of the losing side in the Chinese civil war.
