Default Hehe... I think I broke their minds.

A discussion on a very fundy and bigot-laden board turned to original sin. In the course of discussion when noting that the majority of the bogts were the loud fundies, the following thought occoured to me:

Here is a concept to wiggle your grey matter:

Next time someone claims to not be responsible for slavery, never to have owned slaves, etc... Can you or can you not be responsible for the sins of your ancestors?

If you can, then you ARE responsible.
If you cannot, then original sin is false.

Damn, two of the favorite soapboxes of the far right just collided with devastating consequences.

Awesome!

I hear fundies complain about the "reparation" programs sponsored by the government for minorities (mostly because they say that, as a "religious minority" they should also get special treatment). The argument is always invariably that "we weren't involved in the treatment of these individuals 100 years ago, so why are we still being punished as if we were?"

Interesting. Please keep us updated on what the responses are.

going to run that one by the fundy bf first thing tomorrow morning. he's also african-american, but says that slavery, in principle, is ok - simply because the bible has some stuff on the just treatment of slaves!! i know he also has some very conflicted views on reparations (he's one of those who votes democrat, but thinks republican - the fundy influence imo).

keep us informed about the responses. i am looking for ammo to use in the argument i intend to start...

Achingly brilliant. it's these connective leaps which thrill me to no end.

I have a Fundy relative who tries to 'save' me on occassion, and now that I have a son I fear I shall have to defend his spiritual options as well. Such a wonderful point which opens up salient conflict within fundamentalist xian thought is always welcome!

You rock!

Why was slavery allowed?

It was a way to repay debtors, a good many of the slaves were willing.

The old 'good many of the slaves were willing' leap of credulity based on implied Badfish omniscience...I like it.

Hey wait...you didn't say all...oh well, you almost had it.
