Post A bill that could make the pledge mandatory in Tennessee

I am truly disgusted. Thank baby Jesus I'm moving soon.

They cannot mandate that students have to say the pledge. That was settled in West Virginia State Board of Education v. Barnette, 319 U.S. 624, 642 (1943) which says

Quote:
[T]he action of the local authorities in compelling
the flag salute and pledge transcends constitutional limitations on their
power and invades the sphere of intellect and spirit which it is the purpose
of the First Amendment to our Constitution to reserve from all official
control.
(The quote is from the 9th Circuit Court ruling on the Newdow case.)

Surely the story quoted here misses the point. Can't people say the pledge without the words "under god"? Or have I misunderstood the court ruling?

I think the point of the story quoted is that those in power, and using the fervor from the enraged backlash to their advantage, are pushing forward things they'd never have thought possible before.

Those krazy kookie kristians.

They've thought it was possible ever since the post-9/11 backlash. It's now that it's closer than ever before.

Hi DMB,

Sure they can. But remember, the "under God" version is the OFFICIAL PoA of the USA.

As long as it is the "One True Pledge of Allegiance" (TM) they'll use it to beat up on people who omit things from it.

cheers,
Michael
