Now here's a newspaper that got it right.

"The school board is expected to discuss Thursday night whether teachers should be allowed to teach faith-based ideas along with evolution as explanation for the variety of life."

That one was much better than an article written by the same reporter on the 15th:

Quote:
Evolution may be on the way out as the only theory on the origin of life taught in Cobb County's schools. The school board is considering a policy that would allow science teachers to introduce alternative theories on the beginnings of life, including
(emphasis mine)

Also, note the wording of the poll in the sidebar. The multiple references to the origin of life.

Maybe we should have just let their asses leave the Union.

Ever wonder how much of this hatred of evolution has to do with it being "Yankee"?

Please, every time some one bitches about how the US would be better without the South, they are wasting precious time time that could be better used educating dumbasses in their own back yard. Remember, these are probably the same dumbasses who tell you to leave the country because you are different.

This is as much my nation as it is yours. So get the fuck of the South's back! It's not your whipping boy.

You're right. Obscurantism and anti-intellectualism are not a monopoly held by the South. Racism, sexism, homophobia, and religious bigotries are rife throughout the United States. Therefore, everywhere there are folk who would restrain uncomfortable scientific knowledge with the authority of law.

There are no moral grounds and no practical strategies for quarantining the social diseases that manifest themselves as "creationism." We have to respect the right of others to willfully make themselves morons, but we also have to resist any attempt to use the authority of government to restrict the right of children to freely decide whether they wish to remain slaves to authority or learn to think rationally and critically about their environment and their opportunities.

More like "gag" than "cough." Even so, in England this lot are still regarded more along the lines of extremist nutcases, they aren't anywhere as near to the mainstream as they are here. Here's hoping they stay firmly on the fringe.
