Post NM Catholics in hot water w/ AU

Americans United asserted that the Archdiocese engaged in illegal partisan politicking by asking its 92 parishes to disseminate a flier that portrays Democratic gubernatorial candidate Bill Richardson as "pro-abortion" and his Republican opponent John Sanchez as "pro-life."

According to news accounts, Archbishop Michael Sheehan directed Catholic parishes to disseminate the flier after being contacted by Dauneen Dolce, an official of the Right to Life Committee of New Mexico. The flier was reportedly distributed in at least 12 Catholic parishes in the weeks before the election.

Red face

Always so nice to see a new spin put on the mudslinging! [/sarcasm]

I'll be glad when the elections are over.

Because I live near a catholic church and I park on the road, my cars always contain fliers detailing which candidates are pro-choice and which candididates are anti-choice. All cars around the church get peppered while services are underway.

I've never investigated to find out whether this comes via the parish or is done by another entity, but I'm led to believe it is done - technically - by another entity.

Maybe I'll save a flier for reference this time.

But what I ought to do is work up a flier of my own with some choice bloodletting from our OT friends and christian history, and attach it to those same windshields. Not a bad idea, but I'd feel like such a huckster.

My biggest burr in my buttocks with these pro-life Catholics is when they're also hypocritically pro-death-penalty. Like when Grand Inquisitor Scalia says that Catholic judges who are anti-death-penalty because of their religion should resign, but says nothing about judges who are anti-abortion for the same reason.

I don't know about that. Catholics are anti-Capital Punishment. They have successfully lobbied our Government to postpone all executions for over a year now while their sympathizers at the Senate and Congress create bills abolishing it. The Vatican's position is also anti-CP. Scalia might be influenced by his rightwing-conservative leanings rather than his religion on the Death Penalty issue.

(I myself am mostly anti-DP)

Although the Catholic heirarchy is anti-Capital Punishment, I would say (in the US, at least) that a majority of Catholics are for the death penalty.

I know many Catholics on both sides of the issue, although the Vatican is officially anti-capital punishment (though they didn't used to be when they held political power ). My problem is with politically conservative Catholics such as Justice (and Paul Sorvino look-alike) Scalia, who say it's OK for Catholics to disagree with the Vatican on the death penalty, but not on abortion.
