Post Fear of the Sniper

FDR told us we having nothing to fear but fear itself.

Bob Park had a great item in October 18 <a href="http://www.aps.org/WN/" target="_blank">What's New</a>:

Quote:
5. THE SNIPER: DO YOU TAKE THE STAIRS INSTEAD OF THE ELEVATOR?
After all, people get killed when elevators fall. Oops, people also get killed tripping on the stairs. Here in Washington, a local TV station offered advice on how to bob and weave while filling your gas tank, and some people have been driving miles out of town to fill up. Do they have any idea what the fatality rate is on our roads? Others just stay home. Maybe we should explain to people that you're as unlikely to be the sniper's target as you are to be struck by a falling tree.

Those who know that Dr. Park has been struck by a falling tree will find that last sentence funny. It happened early this year or late last year.

I was struck by a falling apple tree when I was a kid. I was not injured but I was a few inches away from having a smashed in skull.

In any event, how many people in the Beltway from auto crashes since that jerk started murdering people? I bet it is higher than the the sniper's victim count and yet we are not afraid of cars. Football games are being held in undisclosed locations 160 miles away.

I think this is more suitable in Miscellaneous Discussion.
