Did you tithe?
Another thread asks former Christians if they had experienced "transformation," or a deep sense of the presence of God in their lives as Christians. I am interested to know if former Christians tithed. We voluntarily tithed for eleven years, before I began questoning Christian dogma. Now, we give generously to charities that help alleviate suffering throughout the world, such as UNICEF, Project Hope, Doctors Without Borders, OxFam, Care, etc.
Edited to change "alleve" to "alleviate"----guess I've seen the "Aleve" painkiller commercial one too many times... |

Yes. It sickens me to think all the money I've wasted over the years. I won't let my husband tithe anymore, but I had to write a fifty dollar check out to the church last week anyway. It was the first time I've put something in the plate this year.

Yes, I tithed my net income. This was after a discussion with my minister, who said that a lot of the tithe in Biblical times went to social support (widows, orphan, the sick), and since we now pay for that with our taxes one should really tithe net, in his opinion.

I remember tithing, I can also remember dad not paying child support for two of his kids but he always managed to tithe the church some big time money. I remember seeing a check stub from his business to the church for a thousand dollars back in the early 70s. That was a big chunk of change back then. He was a pillar in the church because he probably paid for many pillars to hold the roof up.

The closest I've come to tithing is sponsoring a kid through World Vision.

Nope, never got on the tithing bandwagon. Not that it wasn't brought up in church, though. It was ... many, many times.

I've had too many undeserved financial blessings to stop tithing. I'd tithe if I was backslid. Some folks think that's the case already, I'm sure Rad |

Thankfully, I never had to tithe when I was a Lutheran. However, I'm pretty sure that my grandmother regularly gave money to the church in my name. Once, when I was about 15 or 16, I got a receipt from the church for some money that my grandma had given them in my name.
Furious, I drove over to her house, and when she answered the door, I held up the receipt and sternly said "What the hell is the meaning of this?!" Suffice it to say that the exchange that followed was not pretty. However, it didn't take her long to back down, and that was (thankfully) the last time that money was given to a church in my name. Sincerely, Goliath (edited to add "regularly") |
