Post I feel like I have to LEAVE America for religious freedom!

This is just so frustrating to be an atheist.

This country is going to be all screwed up due to Bush's policies and his nominations for judges. Not to mention all the Republicans that are now in office. Bush had about 40 judges nominated by him that were blocked by a Democratic leader guy (not sure of the name). That guy stepped down after the elections and now all the judges that were nominated by Bush will get through to positions on the bench says the news.

DOES EVERYONE REMEMBER THAT BUSH SAID JUDGES SHOULD UNDERSTAND THAT ALL OF OUR RIGHTS CAME FROM GOD??!!?? What an idiotic prejudice ASS!!!

Now we are going to have all these fundy judges in very POWERFUL seats! This scares the SHIT out of me!!!

I almost feel like I have to "FLEE" to another country for religious freedom!!!

That is absolutely ridicules!!!

I know there still is no place to go but here, but I still feel like leaving.

tdkeyser, that's just what they want us to do. They think if we all leave virtue and "family" values will return to the US. Of course they won't and it would almost be worth it if we all left just to prove them wrong but they would just find another scapegoat to blame. Plus who would design the computers, write software, and teach in American colleges and universities? There would be a substantial brain drain with severe impacts on the US economy.

I intend to stay and fight it out. I made it through the Reagan/Bush(1) years and I think the country will make it through this. Yes they will have a harmful influence and it may be bigger than I think but eventually the pendulum will swing the other way. Probably.

But I live 6 hours from the Canadian border and I can pack pretty fast if I have to.

Do people even bother going to church anymore in Amsterdam?
I was there a couple weeks ago and saw 3 gigantic churches that were closed or are now being used for office space or other non-religious purposes.

The Sunday I was there was the day you guys had that huge storm so I really didn`t see many other people besides my girlfriend and I out and about that morning so I have no idea what a normal Sunday morning is like over there.
I did notice that most everything was closed Sunday and I doubt it was due to all wind.

And whats with most of the shops not opening until noon on Mondays? I have a feeling that it`s got more to do with hang overs than being tired from all the praying you did on Sunday.

Cool

I live about as far and have absolutely no problem abandoning nonessentials and just running.

But in the meantime I have to agree... stay and fight it out unless it becomes clear that we have no hope of winning. If there's a chance of winning we owe it to ourselves and others to try.

Amsterdam is overwhelmingly godless. I lived there awhile. I think the Monday store hours is just tradition. Or, as you said, hangovers.

I have also considered that I may need to eventually leave this country because of religious absolutism. I find this pretty damn funny seeing as I would likely be retracing the steps of my ancestors BACK to Europe with a similar motivation to theirs.

Boy oh boy, can I relate to your feelings, T.

When I saw the news yesterday morning, the first thought that occurred to me is that we are uniquely positioned to plunge directly into a dark ages-style theocracy, or at the very least, McCarthism II, the Wrath of Ashcroft.

I also feel like I have been dropped off at the beginning of an Ayn Rand book, and I am about to witness the world and my rights as I know them crumble around me. How long can I last?

One part of me says, "FLEE!"
The other part says, if I don't stay and fight, then the other side wins.

I am going to stay and do everything I can to preserve the rights of non-believers for my children. But I really do think (removes paranoia hat to make sure she's seeing reality) that it will be harder than usual for the next 2 years.
