Exodus Plagues and Egyptian Gods
Greetings to all, I don't post much here but lurk alot. Was wondering if anyone could point me to some good information about the following:
I ran across a Chick tract about the Exodus plagues that claimed that each of the plagues was designed to discredit the pantheon of Egyptian gods. Here they are: 1. Bloody water - Hapi - the Nile River god 2. Frogs - Heqt - the frog goddess 3. Lice - Seb - the earth god 4. Flies/Beetles - " 5. Beasts - Hathor - the mother goddess 6. Boils - Imhotep - god of medicine 7. Hail - Nut - goddess of the sky 8. Locusts - " 9. Darkness - Horus - the sun god 10. Death of first born - AMun-Re - god of the first born I'm looking for information about the historical aspects of the 10 plagues and how this sequence would/would not support the historicity of the plaques. Is the idea that each plague was focused on an Egyptian god taken seriously in higher critical circles? How does the historical timeline fit? Do the gods mentioned above actually fit the descriptions? I found another website, Exodus Plagues that listed slightly different gods. Who is more accurate, or all of it bull? Thanks in advance for any help I can get. Brian |

Even if they were "designed" to discredit the Egyptian Gods, that does not in itself make the story true. There is of course, no historical evidence for the plagues, (or any of Exodus for that matter).
You should probably pick up a copy of The Bible Unearthed to see just how the evidence (or lack of) lines up. |

www.bibleorigins.net/ExodusProblems.html
http://www.bibleorigins.net/ExodusTi...telKhadim.html www.bibleorigins.net is the most objective resource I can find so far. The idea of getting a copy of The Bible Unearthed by Silberman is a good one because he is a professional archaeologist. I keyed in his full name in the google.com search engine and came across a mini bio of him mentioning http://www.asor.org and then came across plenty of links on Egyptology. Research takes time, a good multisearch engine is http://dmoz.org Let me know what you think of my findings and if you run across any more "Professional" archaeological reviews of the Exodus/Ten Plagues online. I had fun looking this up and being challenged to find an objective source! |

What does lice have to do with earth? 4. Flies/Beetles - " I'm surprised there is no name here, I'm sure there was a beetle god. 5. Beasts - Hathor - the mother goddess Except she wasn't! Much more appropriate would be the separate beast gods, like the Goat and Bull gods. 6. Boils - Imhotep - god of medicine Except he wasn't a god! Thoth would be a better fit. 7. Hail - Nut - goddess of the sky Rain was defined as the product of the Nile gods not Nut, her ony job was to keep the stars up in the sky so meterorite showers would have been more appropriate. 8. Locusts - " Another omission? Why isn't this Seb again? Maybe he didn't get the mesage first time around. 9. Darkness - Horus - the sun god He wasn't, Ra was the sun god, Horus was the "Son" god, resurrected in each Pharoah via a complicated ritual designed to transfer the Horus spirit (signified by the Hawkhead) from father to son. 10. Death of first born - AMun-Re - god of the first born Except he wasn't, he was a late (possibly even after any possible exodus) amalgamation of Amen & Ra, so he became both creator god and sun god in one. I'm looking for information about the historical aspects of the 10 plagues and how this sequence would/would not support the historicity of the plaques. As far as I know there is absolutely no historical basis for any "ten plagues" event. Amen-Moses |

Uh Oh Kosh, you're gonna get blasted for suggesting The Bible Unearthed.
Even though that is the book people who believe the Old Testament should read. [ September 06, 2002: Message edited by: Radcliffe Emerson ]</p> |

Here's a link to Joseph Wheless' analysis of Exodus which is found right here in infidels.org database/search engine and titled appropriately "THE WONDERS OF THE EXODUS"
http://www.infidels.org/library/hist...hapter_04.html Here's the link to all of his works here at Infidels. He covers both Old and New Testament. http://www.infidels.org/library/hist...ss/index.shtml |
