Atheist biblical scholars?
I am engaged in an argument on the christian forums and I am looking for some soures if any of you can assist:
Are there any atheists here who are biblical scholars, and if so what arguments do you have against the history of Jesus being true? The person I am debating is trying to state that no biblical scholar would dispute jesus's historical backing, and that no biblical scholar could disprove the bible. Any assistance you can give is appriciated. |

Not sure if this is the kind of thing your looking for, but I saw this post a couple days ago:
What's the best argument against historical Jesus? Good luck! |

There are biblical scholars who have reached their atheism through studying the bible. Robert Price comes to mind. His position is that you can not prove the existence of a historical Jesus, and that early Christianity appears to have coalesced from many different centers, rather than starting with one (semi-divine or not) person.
Check out his articles in the II Library. |

He is, of course, not here (as he isn't anywhere anymore), but Isaac Asimov was an atheist and since he did write a guide to the bible I'm sure you could consider him a biblical scholar.

Gerd Ludemann is a New Testament scholar who used to be a "liberal Christian" but, if I recall correctly, has since repudiated Christianity entirely. Whether he is an atheist, I do not know. His books are well worth a read.
