Some of those arks had tanks in them. And none of them travelled very far from home, tsunamis and lack of stars notwithstanding.

But what guaranteed that the arks landed in exactly the same spot where they left? Wouldn't they have drifted quite far in a year (or however long the flood supposedly lasted)?

No, they thought to put anchors on. Then the people who were on it got out and closed the doors before the flood started to keep Noah as the only survivor.
