[B]Okay bltl6, how about if the shoe were on the other foot and Our President had said something in reference to America being a nation of Atheist beliefs? Would that make you feel like s/he had no respect for you as a member of America?

I would think that the president is out of touch w/ his people. You know as well as I that the atheist is the minority in this nation. Let's say though that it was known that he was an athiest. If I didn't like it, then he wouldn't have my vote. I wouldn't really be offended though because that's what he believes. I'm not, for example, offened by you or others on this site. I know that here I am the minority. The President does represent America, yes, but he firstly represents his party and values for which he was voted for. He got the Christian (generic) vote and so Christians would expect him to mention God from time to time and do things like Faith-Based inititives (sp?). For that matter, some voted for him based on his economics. Those who did, would expect him to support cutting taxes, ect.

So you're saying that the President can say whatever he wants, as long as he is speaking about the majority of people in America?

I see. So, if our president was voted in by whites because he hated African Americans, it would be alright for him to talk about 'niggers'?

You see, when he takes that oath of office, anytime he speaks or acts in his official capacity, he represents all of us, not just the majority. He is voted in by the majority (and in this case that's questionable) because of his platform, but that does not give him the right to disregard the Constitution or ignore the needs of the minority.

There is not a fine line between what he belives personally, and attempting to impose those beliefs upon the whole nation. When he says we are a god fearing nation, he has clearly crossed the line. If he wishes to speak of god, then he most certianly can say he is a god fearing man. When he speaks for all of us in that way, he is lying and putting psycological chains on those who think differently. He's just told the world how I believe, and it's not true.

Providence was a silly show based in RI that was canned after the first season, IIRC.

Likewise our Congressmen/women. They are supposed to represent us. Public remarks should remain secular and tactful. If they are going express personal opinions, they should preface their remarks by saying IMO.

No one appreciates being misrepresented like that.
