Default Magus55 and Others - If you Distrust the Catholic Church...

Why do you trust the bible so much? IIRC, the Catholic church were the ones who decided what books to put in the bible, so in effect they were the authors. So why believe the bible? It could be a plot by them to deceive you.

I think what you are missing here is that the church members, who decided what books to put into the bible, were not the same ones, who went astray.

But how do they know that the ones today are any better?

"the Catholic church were the ones who decided what books to put in the bible, "

Can anyone tell me where to read of this? The name of the place it happened? Was it one event or a series? What name does the church give to the deciding process?

This is no sarcasm. Its a legitamate inquiry.

Thanks in advance for any info,

John

You might want to take a look at Richard Carrier's The Formation of the New Testament Canon. Technically it wasn't a one-time decision, but an evolving process over many centuries. Also, the Eastern Orthodox Church might have a few words to say about the "Catholic Church deciding what books to put in the bible." It seems there were some books that the church in the west wanted in that the church in the east didn't (eg, Revelation) and vice versa. If I remember correctly, the current New Testament was kind of a compromise between the two wings of the church (which were not split at the time).
