Question What is Isaiah 16:11 saying?

Isaiah 16:11
Wherefore my bowels shall sound like an harp for Moab, and mine inward parts for Kirharesh.

Well, forgive my simple reading, but the first part clearly brings to mind the idea of "passing gas," also known as farting.

This verse is rendered quite differently in different Bible versions (not surprisingly).

YLT: Therefore my bowels for Moab as a harp do sound, And mine inward parts for Kir-Haresh.

NASB: Therefore my heart intones like a harp for Moab And my inward feelings for Kir-hareseth.

VCV: My heart cries for Moab like a harp playing a funeral song; I am very sad for Kir Hareseth.

RSV: Therefore my soul moans like a lyre for Moab, and my heart for Kir-heres.

ASV: Wherefore my heart soundeth like a harp for Moab, and mine inward parts for Kir-heres

GW: That is why my heart mourns for Moab like a harp. My soul mourns for Kir Hareseth.

NLT: I will weep for Moab. My sorrow for Kir-hareseth£ will be very great

---------

What these verses are allegedly describing is the disaster to befall Moab.

Isaiah allegedly saw "in the spirit the purpose of God concerning Moab, in which he could not and would not make any change; but it threw his soul into all the restlessness of pain." [Keil & Delitzsch Commentary on the Old Testament]

That's the King James version

The New KJV:
Isaiah 16
11 Therefore my heart shall resound like a harp for Moab, And my inner being for Kir Heres.

NIV:

My heart laments for Moab like a harp, my inmost being for Kir Hareseth.

New American Standard:

11
Therefore my [1] <*1> heart intones like a harp for Moab And my [2] inward feelings for Kir-hareseth.
Lit entrails murmur
Lit inward part

So it sounds like modern translators are trying to clean up the literal embarassing words.

Hi Don - we seem to be cross posting a lot.

<a href="http://www.americanatheist.org/aut00/T1/editor.html" target="_blank">American Atheist's take on it</a>:

That Yahweh carries out some sort of metabolism is indicated not only by his having to breathe but also by his possession of bowels (mey’im, ‘intestines&#8217 ; ) - structures needed for digesting food that is needed for energy metabolism. We learn in Isaiah 16:11 not only that Yahweh has bowels, but that they make noises: a sure sign of metabolic goings-on! That verse reads: “Wherefore my bowels shall sound like an harp for Moab, and mine inward parts (kerev, ‘bowels&#8217 ; ) for Kirharesh.” From the context of the verse, some scholars have concluded that what this verse really means is that Yahweh is farting at Moab and Kirharesh to show his disdain for them. Colorful as this verse may be, the important point is that it shows that Yahweh carries on digestive metabolism that is assisted by intestinal microbes that produce the gas that he passes so musically.
(edited to remove accidental smilies)

Actually, God doesn't have any of those things. The bible says God is spirit. It's not litterally speaking about God having intestines.

I've always wondered about a verse in Song of Songs in KJV that says "my lover is come and my bowels are moved for him."

Where? Sounds like over literalizing to me.
