Question Muhammad a brigand?

I just read an account of various religious figures, and in the chapter on Muhammad, it says that while in Medina, he and his followers made a living by raiding caravans. How well supported is this account?

These accounts are supported by the Hadiths themselves and biographies of Mohommed written shortly after the begining of Muslim empire.

Of course, if you are a moderate muslim, you will never believe that the Quran spoke of Muhammad as a 'horse robber'.
