<a href="http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&u=/ap/20021008/ap_on_go_co/congress_pledge_6" target="_blank">House Affirms 'Under God' in Pledge</a>

The brave ones:

Quote:
The measure passed in a 401-5 vote. Those members voting against the bill were Reps. Barney Frank, D-Mass., Michael Honda, D-Calif., Jim McDermott, D-Wash., Bobby Scott, D-Va. and Pete Stark, D-Calif.

Four members — Reps. Gary Ackerman, D-N.Y., Earl Blumenauer, D-Ore., Nydia Velazquez, D-N.Y. and Mel Watt, D-N.C. — voted present rather than record a yes or no vote.
But notice:

Quote:
The bill is a non-binding resolution that will have no legal bearing on the lawsuit.

The measure also includes rules on the appropriate manner for saying the pledge, including a provision that says anyone reciting it should remove nonreligious headdress with the right hand and hold it at the left shoulder, with the hand resting over the heart.

The Senate has already passed a bill, but it did not include the headdress provisions. Lawmakers there are expected to pass the House version soon. It would then go to the White House for the president's signature.
So religion even gets a special dispensation from doffing the hat or scarf (or burka).

I don't know what the idiot who wrote that Bill was talking about, but the Northwest Ordinance was passed before the Constitution was, 1785 or somesuch. That is, if they are talking about the establishment of the Northwest Territories.

How can they prove your headdress is not religious? Some people are religious in their sports fanaticism. What if my religion is the Chicago Cubs, can I keep my Cubs hat on? We all know that it takes a pure act of faith to root for the Cubs.

Toto: That's the pure irony of it though isn't it? If they indicated that all headdress must be removed, even religious headdress, that would be a violation of church and state, right?

Angry

Damnable fundies.

This is the first step down the long and painful road of religious dictatorship.

I cannot be the only one apalled at the blatant hypocrisy that is the religious right. "Law abiding" my ass. They're a bunch of grubby hick red-neck rights abusing bastards.

Does anyone know where I might find a super-graphic statue of some fertility god that would be lightweight enough to make into a hat? I have decided to become a very devout follower of whatever religion has gods with the most disturbingly oversized schlongs.

There are plenty of Kokopeli (sp?) paraphanalia all over around here. I'm sure somewhere there's a hat with him on it. (If you're unfamiliar, he's the fertility god who used to detach his penis and send it floating downstream to impregnate the women doing their laundry. He looks kinda like Sideshow Bob, and is almost always playing a pipe or flute of some sort.)

Oh ya. Freyr, a fertility God (obviously) was one of the three main Gods worshipped in old Uppsalla along with Oden and Thor.

Now for more statue porn

Anyone want to make "There is no God" hats? Or maybe make a "Under Vishnu", or "In Odin We Trust". Seems a bit easier and needing less explanation that a statue of a guy with an erection.
