Hindus, Hindus! They first discovered America. Everyone knows that and it is a Western conspiracy to cover it up!

On a serious note, among Mayan ruins are found some sculptures with lotus and snake motifs identical to Indian sculpture; and the Mahabharata speaks of a craftsman called Maya who came from a far land beyond seas to help build a palace. So some claim that there were links between South America and Classical India. But no other evidence has been found about this.

The discoverers of America were people of far eastern Asia, most likely the tip of Siberia at the time of the Bering Land Bridge some 12,000 or as much as 40,000 years ago by the newest findings. These Siberians are the ones who discovered America. Even given the latest possible date for the crossing, 12,000 BCE, they could not have possibly been Muslims. Islam had not been hallucinated by Muhammad until the early 7th Century CE. Those Siberians brought their nature religions with them.

Don't insult the Aboriginal Peoples of America by senseless arguments about the Spaniards, Norse, Irish, or Phoenicians discovering them first. None of those groups existed as nations yet while America was already populated by descendants of east Asians.

As for the Spanish, they definitely did not discover America in any way. Columbus is a disgrace. He was preceded to America definitely by the Norse (Greenland, Lanse au Meadows Newfoundland), possibly the Irish St. Brendan, doubtfully the Phoenicians....but very definitely by the Siberians by a good 12,000 year lead.

All Columbus did was introduce the Hateful Christian god who created Hell for them, and several diseases that almost exterminated them. Those who did not die were often enslaved. I think Americans are bloody hypocrites for celebrating Columbus Day. They should declare that day a Day of Mourning, describe the bloody bastard as he really was, and make Oct 12, a memorial day to the beginning of the near extinction of real Americans by a greedy, unscrupulous, egomaniac who deserves only to be remembered along with Ghengis Khan and Atilla.

I have a serious question about the OP:

Why does it matter what religion was held by whoever "discovered" America "first"? What *possible* difference does it make? What relevance to today's reality? Who cares?

I grew up with this kind of crap in the Israel, where people actually kill each other because each says "Hmmph! I got here first! Mine mine mine!"

It's so silly and counterproductive. Not to mention virtually impossible to prove one way or another.

True true true. We aren't taught the truth about Columbus. Just the myth. I didn't begin to hear the truth until college when I had to read some of his translated letters in an American Literature class. That was one eye-opening class.

Right now I'm reading Lies My Teacher Told Me, which is also quite enlightening.

However, hypocrite or not, we get a three-day weekend to "celebrate" Columbus Day, and you won't find anybody leaping up to put an end to that practice anytime soon.

If anybody in America actually does anything "in memorium" on Columbus Day, I've never heard of it.

Except when you're speaking from the perspective of an Aston Villa supporter.
