Did muslims discover America first?
Hi guys, recently there is a bunch of muslims in my country stating that it was the muslims rather than the Spanish who discovered America first. So, I wonder if they were stating the truth and I'm here to clarify my doubts. Anyone please help?

I thought it was the Viking (from Ireland) who first came to America ...
Edit to add this : <a href="http://www.win.tue.nl/cs/fm/engels/discovery/viking.html" target="_blank">http://www.win.tue.nl/cs/fm/engels/discovery/viking.html</a> <a href="http://www.randburg.com/is/vaka/vinland.html" target="_blank">http://www.randburg.com/is/vaka/vinland.html</a> Well, they went as far as Greenland ... Before I forget, here is some of the links they provided, please have a look.
<a href="http://members.tripod.com/worldupdates/islamintheworld/id27.htm" target="_blank">http://members.tripod.com/worldupdates/islamintheworld/id27.htm</a> <a href="http://www.islamic-paths.org/Home/English/History/Countries/America/Muslims_Before_Columbus_02.htm" target="_blank">http://www.islamic-paths.org/Home/English/History/Countries/America/Muslims_Before_Columbus_02.htm</a> Finally, they (muslims) argued that the American Indians are muslims before the arrival of Columbus. |

It's possible. In the 15th century, when Columbus was trying to get to America, Muslim sailors and traders were more technologically advanced. The claim is that a king in West Africa sent out some sea going voyages that landed in the Carribbean. Also that Columbus depended on some Moorish sailors who were fleeing the Spanish Inquisition.
Edited to add: it's possible that a few Arab or African sailors reached the America, but what does it mean? They didn't establish any trade routes, they didn't bring back the massive amount of wealth that Columbus did. In a way, it seems unlikely that there would have been the complete lack of knowledge about American in Europe if they had. [ December 11, 2002: Message edited by: Toto ]</p> |

Can someone provide with non-Muslims site regarding the matter? This is the bunch who can say Muhammad went to the moon before Kennedy even born.
Do you know WHY Spain agreed to send Columbus to America in the first place? According to history, Muslim occupied Constinepole (oh crap ... forgot the proper name) which was the gateway to the East where the spice were. The sole reason Columbus went to America was to find an alternative sea route. Do you think Columbus or any Spainish king or queen could be stupid enough to send a Muslim together with Columbus? I don't think so. There never been any trace of Islam such as Mosques etc in America and trust me when I say that Islam is a religion which likes to show off. IF a Muslim converted anyone in America, then things such as stone tables, mosques etc will be there to be find. As far as I could say, the Viking were the 1st to come to America and they reached the north section of the continent (probably sailed in a straight fashion from Svandinia). Columbus was the 2nd to reach America and even that by mistake because he wasn't looking for a new continent, he was looking for India thus the name East Indies. Tell the Muslims to stop dreaming that Muslims in the past did anything else except killing, loothing, more killing and procreate like Parasites. And you can say Sephiroth said so ... Time to go home, good night. |

It was actually a group of people from Asia which discovered the Americas, but the date of this event is somewhat disputed -- somewhere from 10- to 50-thousand years ago.

My reply : That's another good point there. Migration of early humans from Africa reached Asia region around 40,000 years ago and one group settled in Asia area while the other when further upward. I believe it was around 30,000 - 20,000 years ago when humans first set foot in America continent. Unless of course they come around saying that those early migrating people were Muslims ... |
