Post GW Bush, Methodist Layman of the Year

Has W. been anointed by God? Does this make you want to barf?

<a href="http://www.goodnewsmag.org/news/010102magarticle_bush.html" target="_blank">President George W. Bush: United Methodist Layman of the Year </a>

Quote:
President Bush represents the mainstream of United Methodism—and indeed historic Christianity—in a way that many denominational leaders do not. It was St. Paul who said that governmental authority is "God’s servant, an agent of wrath to bring punishment on the wrongdoer" (Romans 13:4) and St. Peter who wrote that governments were established by God to "punish those who do wrong and to commend those who do right" (1 Peter 2:14).

"What men write about war, saying that it is a great plague, is all true. But they should also consider how great the plague is that war prevents," the great reformer, Martin Luther said. "If people were good and wanted to keep peace, war would be the greatest plague on earth. But what are you going to do about the fact that people will not keep the peace, but rob, steal, kill, outrage women and children and take away property and honor? The small lack of peace called war must set a limit to this universal, worldwide lack of peace which would destroy everyone."

Sounding very Luther-like, in a speech just days following the September 11 attacks, Bush stated emphatically, "The course of the conflict is not yet known, yet its outcome is certain. Freedom and fear, justice and cruelty, have always been at war. And we know that God is not neutral between them. We will meet violence with patient justice, assured of the rightness of our cause and confident of the victories to come."
W. is Luther-like?

While it almost makes gag to say something nice about dubya, he's nothing as bad as Luther. Hell, given a choice between the two, I'd take Lex over Martin anyday.

Religious freaks continue to try and paint a picture of GW as a Christian man. Would a Christian (or anyone else with a brain) stand by while his father (and GW, too) are making a bundle off of the conflict in Afghanistan (the Carlyle Group)? Sure George, hunting down bin laden and other terrorists will take a long, loooooong time. Enough time for him and daddy to make more money than the Vatican.

Besides, it doesn't matter what he says in his speeches. He does not write them. They are all carefully crafted to try and make him seem better than he is.

I consider this Layman of the Year thing to just crap propaganda. Wait until the whole truth about Enron comes out, and maybe we will be calling him Lying Man of the Year.

When Christians say that Martin Luther is a good guy they are either anti-Semantic or ignorant and I detest both.
