What do people think about the "God-fearing" Jews of Acts 2:5, who are said to be "from every nation under heaven"? Geoff |

Here is a third problem.
Eisenman reckons there are no snakes on Malta (Acts 29:5). Can any bright spark answer that one? Geoff |

Another riddle? (Acts 27:14,15)
If you can't make headway into a north-east wind, which direction are you trying to sail in, easterly or westerly? Geoff |

Is there any evidence for the existence of the Roman governor Festus, apart from Acts 24, 25 and 26, and Ant 20:8:10,11?

Most of the historical background in Acts seems to be correct - but that may be because the novelist who wrote Acts had Josephus and other sources to work with. That doesn't mean that the main characters, Peter and Paul, are portrayed accurately, any more than Gone With The Wind is a correct history of the time. |

Vernon K Robbins replies to Layman starting on page 2, with numerous historical, geographic, and biological references. Have fun. |

Reconstruction of the Acts of the Apostles by a non-professional former Bible College student. Not in a scholarly format, but it does have some interesting ideas.

My view is that the historical background of Acts is far from being correct, in that it is heavily garbled. If there was a novelist, it was the person who did the garbling. Matters are not helped by the similar treatment given to Josephus's writing some of which I think has been made to agree with the NT. Can you tell me how the coins of the URL are linked to Festus? I don't understand how they are. The snake was a brand from the fire made of brushwood. The islanders didn't think "Paul" was a god, but that he must have done something bad because he had just escaped drowning. The "snake" and "god" were the novelist's creation. But perhaps even more importantly, the novelist probably inadvertantly chose the wrong island to have his snake on, because he didn't know that there were no poisonous snakes on Malta. The reason he gave a different island was because he was reversing a journey that was originally from Rome to Jerusalem. This was why the ship couldn't make headway against a hurricane force north-east wind - a point overlooked by our novelist. I think that the "Gate Beautiful" was not in Jerusalem. Geoff |
