Weather superstition
If it's raining and the sun is shining, the devil and his wife are fighting. ?! Have you ever heard of this? It came out of the mouth of my six-year-old niece, and I wonder if she made it up from her imagination, or if she heard this from someone. One of her grandmother's is from New Orleans, and the other one is from Mexico.

My grandmother (my mother's mom) always used to say that when it rains while the sun is shining, it means that the devil is beating his wife. So she didn't make it up. My grandmother lived in Bermuda, where the sun shines during rain often. Whenever I went to visit, I would hear that phrase. My mother said Nan had said it for as long as she can remember, and my grandmother would have been ninety this year. I think it is a fairly old phrase.

And if you stick a pin in the ground, you can hear them!
Yes, if it's raining and the sun is shining, the devil is beating his wife. I'm from Georgia, and my grandmother told me this. She can remember sticking a pin in the ground to see if she could hear when she was little (in her mid-70's now). --tibac |

As silly as this is, what kind of woman would become the wife of the devil?

In Akira Kurosowa's movie "Dreams" There is an episode where it is raining and the sun is out. A little boy's mother tells him to stay inside, because those are the day's the foxes have their wedding processions. (in China and Japan, foxes are considered to be powerful supernatural beings) The little boy goes outside anyway, and witnesses one of the wedding processions, is noticed, and runs away. When he gets home, his mother is waiting for him. She said that an angry fox had come by, and she wasn't allowed to let him back in. The fox had also left a dagger for the boy, aparently to kill himself with. The episode ended with the little boy trekking accross country to the land of the foxes to ask for forgiveness, carrying the dagger.
