I used to say "God" quite a bit, just as an automatic exclamation (and had people chide me about using the Lord's name in vain). The last month or so, though- since I joined II, in fact- I realized I wasn't saying that. It wasn't until I concentrated that I realized I was saying "Man!"

An improvement, I suppose, although someone might accuse me of taking humanity's name in vain.
Man Dammit!

... That is just so brilliant on so many different levels. I love it and I'm stealing it.

On the one hand you have fundies who will hear it and think to themselves that you must be a fellow member of the faith for refraining from taking god's name in vain. A particularly astute one might make a connection between the choice of the word 'Man' with belief that 'god is beyond mortal comprehension' etc.

On the other, to the Atheist it means the exact same thing as the parent phrase - a person cursing something via proxy. Rather ironic, too, given that to an Atheist gods are man's creation.

If you like it, use it! It's hardly as though I was conscious I was doing it until about two days ago .

I would not have thought of this analysis. Is it okay if I steal it and use it when someone asks why I'm saying that? .

Question

From the beginning I knew this idea would be fraught with difficulties- and one that I, as a moderator, must face is, this topic does not belong in EoG.

And you know, I can't figure out just where it should go. I have it down to Secular Lifestyles or Church-State Separation- and since SL&S is not for serious debate, I will go with C-S S.

If this actually goes far enough to be implemented and not just discussed, I think I would then put it in a private forum. But since HelenSL is giving us her (very useful IMO) opinions on the subject, I am strongly averse to moving this away from an open forum.

So let us adjourn to C-S S.
