Well, I was reading on "Another Board" about how Lance Armstrong, when asked if he attributed his recovery from cancer and his success from God, states that he attributes both to hard work, luck, and his doctors. This has resulted in a separation from his wife who is a devote Christian.

Anyways, I mention it because one person--who may post here, actually--noted that Mr. Klaas responded angrily to the suggestion that it was a "miracle" that Susan Smart was found--it implies that children who are not are "not worthy" or their families did not pray enough!

Credit where credit is due: Ugly Religion

I wish I could find on The Onion page the editorial where a small crippled boy asks God if he can walk again.

God answers. . . .

"No!" says God.

pariahSS, a lot of Christians pray, and when someone get's saved by a doctor, they contribute it to God.

After all did'nt scientists discover GOD's handiwork through science. The cure exixts but humans may still be blind to the clues GOD left behind.

pariahSS, when Christians are in a life threatening situation (plane crash) and a few walk out, they say that it was God who saved them.

If humans did not save them then who did? ask yourself that question? who would you have called upon? superman?

pariahSS, he is making a point of how ridiculous this is. I recommend thinking before speaking, but hey maybe its just me.

It does not hold as much ridicule as what will be left after I am finished with you.

Docter X,

there seems to be a compound problem here, between understanding the nature of this life and constantly demanding favours of GOD. It seems for most of you GOD is some damm footrag you call upon and walk upon whenever you wish and you please, whenever your own darn mechanisms fail you or you are to lazy to even try.

I wish I could find on The Onion page the editorial where a small crippled boy asks God if he can walk again.

Firstly the communication with GOD was not firmly established, therefore the call upon GOD may be like squeaking to a lion. Following this it becomes impudent to claim GOD answers no. You are ridiculing the GODfaring by using the same mechanism you use to debunk their beliefs. The "where is this GOD" argument. Here you are blantly claiming this GOD has answered.

You have to realise the difference between the constant presence of GOD, and the occasional presence of GOD. Perhaps all Christians do when addressing the GOD is imploring the GOD to take a more active part in their affairs, in other words THEY WANT TO BE PART OF GOD.

Now rationally speaking, if you are Individual X, and you are not GOD then it readily implies GOD is not a constant presence within Individual X. If you wish GOD to be constantly present then you LOSE your indivuality, you absolute nuts.

The point is that in so many cases where people are saved by other people, they still attribute it to god. But when everyone on a plane dies, you don't hear so many people going around saying goddidit.

I was nearly killed in a car crash some years ago. At the moment of impact I thought I was going to die. I didn't call on god or superman. My thoughts went approximately, "Oh, shit! This is it."

With regard to car accidents and consequent deaths, have you ever asked yourself why for any particular country or region the statistics hardly vary from one year to the next? Can it be that god has decided that in country X about 5000 people should die in crashes per year?

We know the basic reasons why car crashes occur and why people die in them. There seems to be nothing much supernatural about them. And yet when I had my accident, quite a few friends said to me words to the effect: "Why did this have to happen to you? You didn't deserve it." I didn't think it had a lot to do with my deserts, other than my stupidity in driving when I was at less than my best through tiredness.

DMB, ...when everyone on a plane dies, you don't hear so many people going around saying goddidit.

The rational explaination for this is human failure, Does GOD have to rectify every single human failure, one after another. Would it not have been better in that case to have "dial a safe experience".

The conditions for dial a safe experience would be one would dial up the experience, say OK GOD, a nice skyride, then one would join with GOD and ride through the sky, enjoying GOD, not your individual experience.

You people do not seem to get the point. You cannot always call upon the GOD then wanna be an individual at the same time. Does this not STRIKE YOU as illogical.

We’re just having a bit of fun with your name. Remember, there may be a lot of smart people here, but there are lot of smartasses too. Nothing personal though, and in case no one did so, welcome to the SecWeb, the wildest ride on the Internet carnival.

Thank you, DMB, and judging from your subsequent post I see you still have a fatal attraction for tarbabies. Have fun.

Right . . . I had hoped to avoid this. . . .

Sophie:

A rather pernicious tumor exists that consists of a malignant transformation of the supporting cells of the brainstem. They generally arise in the pons or metencephalon. Surgery cannot help; it diffusely spreads through the substance of the pons. Radiation and chemotherapy somewhat slows progression.

It just so happens that these tend to arise in children and adolescents. As with real estate, with the central nervous system it is "location, location!"

It involves the motor pathways.

The child, then, has the pleasure of progressively losing control of her body, including her oropharynx. Since the senory pathways are located in a different area, she feels pain--such as that developing bed sore. The trigger for consciousness is located further "up," so the child will remain conscious until the end.

The end?

Over months, the child will require a tracheostomy and a feeding tube. She will experience all of the pain and suffering. She will know what is happening to her. Since the pathways for certain eye movements are also located further "up" in the brain stem, she can effect some communication through looking.

Usually, pneumonia, or a urosepsis eventually puts them out of their misery.

This is extensive, severe, and prolonged suffering, both physical and emotional. It exists. It is real.

Today, should I drop a ball from the Leaning Tower of Pisa, and should it halt its fall roughly 3.76 inches from the ground, physicists will have to explain it. Theories of how the universe works must account for actual observations.

Therefore, based on the facts of the case, we may conclude one of the following:

1. No gods exist.
2. A god exists and he is evil.
3. A god exists and he is incompetent.
4. A god exists and he is irrelevant.
5. Some combination of 2-4.

You are, of course, free to choose.

Howard:

Thank you!
