the serpent of Genesis 3
I am curious: for what reasons do Christians take the Serpent in Genesis 3 to be Satan?

Probably because of Revelation 12:
8But he was not strong enough, and they lost their place in heaven. 9The great dragon was hurled down--that ancient serpent called the devil, or Satan, who leads the whole world astray. He was hurled to the earth, and his angels with him. |

The Serpent "Lifted Up"
There is an interesting comparison of Jesus to " the serpent" in John 3:14. Some scholars say that the parallelism shows a decided Gnostic influence in the Fourth Gospel....

Because the Serpent is the one who tricked Eve into eating from the Tree. Since sin didn't exist in the Garden, and the only Sinner's in existence were Satan and his fallen angels, the serpent was Him. Also, most normal serpents don't talk...

The Bible says what it means and means what it says, except when it doesn't. Basically, fundamentalist Christians believe in a literal interpretation of the Bible, except when it's necessary to take a figurative, metaphorical, allegorical, or other non-literal interpretation.
