Question Translations, gender, and so on

In religion class today, we got to discussing incorrect translations in various versions of the bible, and our teacher said the original greek word for 'people' was translated as 'men', and god was originally genderless, but the 'him' pronoun (or whatever it is) was added in. I thought this was interesting; was god originally genderless, but made male because of male dominance in the world at the time?
Also, the 'daily bread' mentioned in the Lord's prayer is actually assumed to be bread, but the original word is unknown.
I don't know if these examples have ever been brought up before, but it's 2am here, so I can't think any more.
