120,000,000 year old map
A co-worker who is quite prone to believe the FBI has little green men and that big foot really does take human males for love slaves recently bought this little gem into work for me.
<a href="http://english.pravda.ru/main/2002/04/30/28149.html" target="_blank">http://english.pravda.ru/main/2002/04/30/28149.html</a> It's claim is that scientists working in Russia date this *map* as being from 120MA. Yup, a 120,000,000 year old map. This is not my area of expertise (outside of porn, programming and hockey I'm just a novice) so any thoughts from someone with more knowledge in this field would be great. I don't believe this for a minute, but only because it's claim is so groundshattering. I lack the knowledge to say "why" it's false. |

cool! this is the first I ever heard of it. Sounds sort of like the Chinese "Dropa Stones"

A couple of notes:
They tried to use radiocarbon dating on the rock? The map scale is listed as 1 : 1.1 km, or only 88% of full size? (probably should say 1 cm : 1.1 km.) They claim the map is machined, but then try to date the rock itself. I could have machined an ancient rock last week, it wouldn't make the map any older than last week. Looks pretty weak to me.... |

Maybe they were referring to the method they used to date the rocks at Stonehenge, a very expensive complex test that determines how long the rock was exposed to the sun and weather.

I'm sorry, but when I look at this, the word "map" does not immediately pop into my mind.
I'm also pretty wary of the claim that the region was like it is on the "map" 120 million years ago. I'm not a geologist, but I wouldn't think that most geological features (like a canyon) could survive for that long without being eroded away. theyeti |

Read it again: fossil was 120 myo, map age unknown. In fact very little is known for sure except map looks like some type of relief map used by MILITARY.............my best CLUE from the article. Military type research, maps, and plans are always big secrets. Right hand never tells left hand. The unknown language could be some military code. The scientific details missing from the article could clarify the mysteries BUT then who buys Pravda for scientific research ? I would guess that a google search or archeological library research would give the whole thing a very different slant.

There is a small part of the article that does claim the map as 120MA
"The map was probably created at the time when the Earth’s magnetic pole situated in the today’s area of Franz Josef Land, while this was exactly 120 million years ago Although that part seems to be a conculsion from the author of the article and not from the University. I was surprised when my internet search results yeiled Bashkir State University as a real school with accredidation. I was expecting a fluff UFO type degree mill. Also to note Pravda is a news site. With most of their stories being traditional news. I have no idea though if it's typical of Russian news sites to report Week World News types of stories of if they are generally respectable. |

A highly-advanced civilisation that makes maps on rocks that weigh "at least one ton"? You'd think that the aliens/atlantians/energy beings/whatever would come up with something a little more convenient.

Well I am no expert....but it looks an awful lot like a cracked rock to me. If there proof is "indisputable" as claimed in the article why isn't this plastered all over the place?

And why are all the photos blurred, from the side or far away? Why is there no comparison to an actual map? Why do I laugh at this patheticness?
