Christians call God "good", despite his need to torture billions of people for eternity - so it's clear to me that God is good - to Christians!

Heaven was created for Christians, according to this selfish world view, and I think earth was created for the meek to inherit. I don't know about the rest of the universe. Well, hell was created for non-believers, and I guess the stars were created so there would be little lights in the sky.

Sometimes, when I'm speaking with fundies, I'm struck by the thought that we think we are modern man, but really are still primitive superstitious tribes.

I think few people deserve to be mocked mercilessly for anything.

As a Christian, I replied earlier. That the universe was created for a single species of ape to enjoy is clearly not my belief, therefore you should be less general when you imply that this is a belief of all Christians.

Why do you think they should be embarrassed if they hold this belief? I was unaware that anyone knew *why* the universe was created, so to me one explanation is as good as the next.

My apologies. I didn't know you were a Xian, and the fact that you don't think the universe was created just for you led me to assume you were not.

You really think "one explanation is as good as the next"? And if I told you that I believed that the universe was created as a toilet for my dog?

For something currently unknowable, yes, one explanation is as good as the next. If you told me that the universe was created as a toilet for your dog, I'd probably smile and say I disagree.

Currently unknown - Not unknowable. And in the case of something unknown, more plausable idea's are better than less plausable ideas, so one idea is not always as good as the next.

Yes, unknown not unknowable. I think the *why* of the universe's creation/purpose probably is unknowable, though. For something that does not concern me, one idea is as good as the next IMO.

And, of course, the question itself begs the question (which, I think, makes it officially a "complex question").

There is not necessarily a reason for the universe's existence, so "why?" is quite possibly redundant.
