Oh well, I eneded up using the good old parents standby "Because I said so!".

At least he has agreed to start wearing pants around the house but that could be more to do with the weather getting colder.

I actually like this period of my childrens development (5-8 ish) because it is when all the "Why?" questions come out so it is far more interesting for the parent than the "I want" stage or the adolescent "mnmphgrrr" stage.

Oh and for those who suggested that playing with himself and masturbation are different things I will keep that in mind just in case he does it in front of guests.

I have taken the "it is bad manners to do it in public" approach with my 3 year old. It is a battle just to keep underwear on that kid when we are home (much less any other clothing). Trying to teach this kid a little socially appropriate modesty is almost imposible. He would be happiest if he never had to wear clothes.

I'm also trying to teach him that there is an appropriate time/place to do these things. If I see him grab the goods I just tell him that if he wants to do that he needs to do it in his room. I treat it just like when I catch him trying to take a leak in my husband's shoe or a toy.... pee should only go in the toilet.

kids masturbating is not about sex, it's about discovering something pleasurable with their own bodies. They're just exploring sensations.

And this is different from how adults mastrubate exactly how?

Orgasm mainly. My kid has been playing pocket pool since he was in the womb. I seriously doubt he is getting as much out of it as someone past puberty would. It is more of a "look what I can do with my winky" thing.

I'm not sure that orgasm for a male is only onset at puberty, I know that there will not be any active sperm in any ejaculation but surely the wiring is already in place!

I remember the first time I ever orgasmed and it was shortly before my voice broke and long before any other signs of puberty showed, in fact I think I was around 9 or 10 at the time. It was a shocking experience because of the intensity and once I knew about it I could do it again and again. (unfortunately that original intensity has never been matched, oh how I envy women their orgasms! )

A friend of mine once asked me if her 4 year old daughter could possibly experience orgasm because she had found her putting objects into her vagina and when asked why she did it she said she liked that "funny feeling" she got if she did it just right. I suggested that her daughter may be the worlds youngest G spot discoverer.

Oooh, I know what you mean. I haven't had a good one since Mother Theresa died, and I used to pull my pud five times a day. it's a bloody shame if you ask me, not least because I've now got thousands of pounds worth of useless jazz mags. Bestiality will be going the same way too before long if were not careful.

I think Glory is exactly right to equate it with public nose-picking or chewing with one's mouth open. Children just have to learn that people don't want to see you doing these things (or, for example, smelling your farts either) and will think the worse of you if you do. You can also make it clear that most people do all of these things in private, although it is not considered polite to discuss them either.

Mind you, I think one can go a bit too far in being the accepting parent. I will never forget being in the garden of a rural English pub nearly 30 years ago with a girlfriend and her 3-year-old son. She suddenly shouted at him in a voice that drew everyone's attention, "Do you need to pee, or are you just wanking?"

I honestly can't see anything wrong with masturbation. Only seeing other males masturbate or females I find unpleasant to look at, but overall I think the practice is very pleasurable and seems to cause no harm. I think the right to sex and masturbation should be one of the most fundamental. I honestly see it as important a right or human desire as that of free speech, free conscience and private property in any case. More important then property actually. The outlawing of sex in 1984 was honestly one of the most disturbing aspects of Oceanic society to me.

It would be charitable of you to include in brackets (no pun intended) when you use my moniker in such an unsalubrious context.
