Default Questionarre.

Why do you not believe in a god? Is it because of lack of evidence or something else? Explain.

I don't because of a lack of evidence to support anything supernatural.

Yes, it's hard to believe in something that has no good evidence for it. Especially when it is absurd to begin with.

Edited to add:

Welcome, btw. I see you are new here.

Welcome Andrew.

Yeah, lack of evidence in ANY God, and a good bit of evidence _against_ the Christian God.

It just doesn't make any sense.
It just doesn't make any sense.

It never has, since I was 12 years old. I always just shake my head and think,

It just doesn't make any sense.

(And from time to time I also think, How can you believe that?)

That makes you an eight-year veteran. Longer than a lot of people here, probably including some of the moderators.

No. We have a few theists hanging around here as well. Most of the theists are Christians, but there are a few Muslims, pagans, etc. And many of the non-theists would consider themselves agnostics rather than atheists.

Nah. There are some agnostics, the odd christian and a pagan or two. Even a jew, I think.

We're equal opportunity.

Well, I've been an atheist for 31 years, so you might figure my reasons are many. It sort of depends on my mood as to what reason I find most compelling at any given time. Here's some:

(1) I'm suspicious of god-belief because it is self-serving.

This might be my core motivation for disbelief in god(s).

I've always had a skeptical view of Xnty and other religions because they seem to be telling it like they *wish* it were, rather than how it is.

(2) Taking all the evidence into consideration, materialism appears to be the best explanation for observed phenomena.

Although there have been observed phenomena that appear to contradict natural laws, they have rarely, if ever, been replicated in a controlled, experimental setting.

I find it hard to account for any kind of god in a materialist metaphysics.

(3) Even if god exists, he is incomprehensible to humans, making belief, faith, worship, or any affirmative statement about him invalid ab initio.

Xns say that god cannot be understood, that god is infinite and greater than human perception, and that god moves in mysterious ways. Then they turn around and profess to have an omniscient understanding of the nature and purposes of their god. WTF?!

Welcome to the boards Andrew.
