Saving faith is not in the existence of Christ but is faith in his promises. The bible says that those who have seen and believed are blessed, but that those who have not seen but still believed are even more blessed.

Also, it was probably the thief's belief in Jesus' messiahship and promises (as Atticus said) than it was in the physical existence of Jesus.

Gosh, you'd think that such a simplistic concept would be pathetically transparent to anyone with half a brain, right? Don't we all want to be more and more blessed?
