My school project on Amos
Hi, I'm a student at Jerry Falwells Christian Conservate Liberty University. I'm doing a school project for my Old Testament class on the book of Amos. It is to be a teaching presentation in front of the class and I'm looking for creative ideas to make it fun. Please post your ideas and thoughts on the book here. Thanks!

That's easy, Amos is a bizzare nut who couldn't form a coherent sentence if his afterlife depended on it.
That failing a good resource is here It seems like a good choice for a project. Short book -- less reading. m. P.S. You don't actually go to Liberty U, do you? Poor baby! |

Thanks for the reply. I read the annotations, sounds interesting, and I'll talk to my teacher about what he thinks of it. I'm looking for a fun way to present the material like in a skit or something. Are there more resources that present different views on this book on the internet?
Yes I really go to Liberty University, It's my last sememster and I don't want to get kicked out so thats all I'm going to say. Please keep the replies coming. Thanks! [ February 09, 2002: Message edited by: libertydude ]
|

It seems you already have some good ideas. Want to share some of those with us? We might then give more specific suggestions. After all, it is YOUR project.
I have a feeling Christianity needs more people like you inside the fold. [ February 10, 2002: Message edited by: critical thinking made ez ]
|

OK, heres one idea, my group will attempt to make a short movie presenting the book literally, for example, I would dress up as god and hold a plum line. I know a friend of mine that has made a lot of funny movies with her video camera, so I could get her to help.
After we show the movie in class, my group could go over the points again and clarify everything. In the past students have taken popular culture like that survivor T.V. show to present a book of the Bible but I can't imagine how they pulled that off. Thanks for all the replies so far! |

A plumb-line? Kind'a lame...
How about dressing up as God and dropping fire balls (paper-on-fire) onto the homes of the village (models). Then release insects on to the village. Then smite it with a sword. After this demonstration, show a more forgiving God after the Jesus movement. Start a fire ball up then put it out and claim you forgive the villagers because of Jesus, seal up a bottle of insects because of Jesus' sacrifice. And finally sheath your sword and proclaim that you need not kill anymore since the blood of Jesus has changed the spiritual nature of man. You can then explain why it took God so long to have Jesus arrive on earth to stop the blood shed and killing by God. With a good answer here, you should get an A or at least a B on your project. |

I think this approach would cover all the chapters of Amos and then blend in the Christian view to show the reason for Amos being included in the bible anyway. A fundie Bible school like you're stuck in should eat it up.

Well, God never wanted to hurt man. It was mans own choice in the Garden that cause God to have to become a bully for so many thousands of years. So you might want to throw in some…”I didn’t want to have to do this” while you rain down the fire-balls and smiting the village with the sword.
In the conclusion you can explain how man brought this on himself by choosing knowledge over obedience to God, in the Garden of Eden. Then quickly say that it wasn’t really “knowledge” he chose but rather his disobedience of God’s command not to gain any type of knowledge from the Tree. I guess it was God who inspired the saying, “Ignorance is Bliss”. Then you can move on to Gods plan of salvation for man, thus ending the constant punishments and torments from God. Then end with this: “While there will always be a price to pay for original sin, such as 9-11, when Jesus returns it will all come to an end. I think blending in some current events (9-11) may help keep the topic fresh and up-to-date. It would also help vindicate Jerry's comments on 9-11.
