Moses the Mythic Hero?
Having scored Jesus Christ, I'll now score Moses, using only the Tanakh/OT. I'm not familiar with later rabbinical legends, though they may make his score higher.
1. 0.5 - Moses's mother was a descendant of Levi, and Moses was her first child. 2. 0.25 - Moses's father was also a Levite. 3. 0.25 - Same tribe. 4. 0 - Nothing out of the ordinary is hinted at. 5. 0 - No hint of that. 6. 1 - The Pharaoh wants Israelite baby boys dead, though he does not specifically target Moses. 7. 1 - The baby Moses is sent down the Nile in a waterproofed basket. 8. 1 - Moses is raised by the Pharaoh's daughter; the Pharaoh's court is practically a foreign country compared to where Moses's parents had lived. 9. 1 - No other details. 10. 1 - He travels back to his fellow Israelites. 11. 1 - He leads them out of Egypt, triumphing over the Pharaoh and his army. 12. 0 - Nothing unusual about his wife. 13. 1 - He becomes the Israelites' new leader. 14. 1 - Mostly a lot of wandering in the desert, with nothing special happening. 15. 1 - For the most part, that is correct; Moses issues lots and lots and lots of laws. But the golden-calf incident may lower this score. 16. 1 - God does not allow him into the Promised Land. 17. 1 - His people leave him behind as they enter that land. 18. 1 - Moses had been in good health despite being 120 years old when he died. 19. 1 - He dies on top of Mt. Pisgah. 20. 1 - His successor Joshua is the son of Nun, who is someone else. 21. 0 - He is buried. 22. 0 - His burial place is unknown. Score: 15 My score is significantly less than Lord Raglan's; I wonder if LR had given greater weight to Moses's Levite ancestry and some other such things. However, Moses still scores fairly high. |
